A never-ending party took place in Stratford last week when, for the first time ever, the Festival celebrated a succession of seven opening nights to open the 1984 festival. There were the usual fanfares, stretch limousines, champagne and wine and the beautiful people in 'their tuxedos, gowns, furs,diamonds and phoney smiles. And there were the ordinary people - who couldn't afford a ticket to the theatre so instead came to take. pictures of the celebrities who could! The Festival opened Sunday night with director John Hirsch's version of Shakespeare's "A Mid- summer Night's Dream" which opened to mixed reviews. One of the playwright's romantic fantasies, it stars Patricia Conolly, Nicholas Pennell and Brian Bedford and runs on the .Festival Stage until October 27. Tuesday evening's opener was one of Shakespeare's favorite romantic works, "Romeo and Juliet", starring Seana McKenna, Colm Feore and Richard Monette and playing until October 26. A man from whom we always expect the best and from whom we always receive it, Douglas Camp- bell, stars in Shakespeare's "Love's Labour's Lost" which opened Wednesday on the Festival Stage. Nicholas Pennell and John Neville join Campbell in this Michael Langham-directed story about a king and three of his comrades who agree to forsake wine, women and song in favor of their studies. Interspersed with the Festival Theatre openings were two openings at the Avon and two at The Third Stage. On Monday the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, "Iolanthe", directed and choreographed by Brian Macdonald and starring Maureen Forrester, Paul Massel and Karen Wood, took audiences on a journey into a fantasy land of stodgy old peers and woodland nymphs., It will play until August 12. The big hit of last year, G and S's "The Gondoliers", opened Thursday night, to play until September 1. In 'starring roles are Douglas Chamberlain, Karen Skidmore and John Keane. On The Third Stage, the ever -popular classic, "Waiting For Godot", by Samuel Beckett, opened Friday night. This two - person meaningful play stars Edward Atienza .and Brian Bedford and runs until August 25. The Young Company star in Shakespeare's "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" which opened on' The Third Stage Saturday night. The story of a young man who deserts his beloved for the woman of his best friend's affection, this is a Leon Rubin direction and runs until September 1. More fine plays join the season later. Tickets may be ordered by calling 273-1600 but get into your piggy bank. You won't get mu of a view for less than 2ol rs and, considering you will' want to eat at a fancy restaurant, will need a babysitter for eight hours and will have to get to Stratford somehow, the evening will set you back more than chickenfeed! Stars Lee Marvin, Oliver Reed, Robert Culp. Three partners prospect for gold and one of them absconds with the proceeds and makes a fortune.
