REELING IN A BIG ONE—Eileen, a client at the Jack Reavie Vocational Centre in
Wingham, was one of the almost 50 people taking part in last Friday's fishing derby at
the Wingham Sportsmen's Club. Mentally -handicapped children and adults from the
Silver and Golden Circle schools in in Wingham, the vocational centre, the
Midwestern Regional Centre at Palmerston and the Wingham Group Home took part
in the annual event.
Liberals chose Turner
Local delegates discuss
leadership convention
After all the deals, the
promises and the ex-
citement, the Liberal Party
selected John Turner as its
leader and the 17th prime
minister of Canada last
.• Saturday at the Civic Centre
in Ottawa.
A number of local Liberals,
attended the convention as
delegates or as onlookers to
"history in the making".
Their choices for leader may
have differed, but all admit
to being caught up in the
heady atmosphere of the
convention.
Mac Inglis, a Belmure-
area' farmer and one of the
Huron delegates, -chose John
Turner on the second and
final ballot. He said he chose
Mr. Turner because h,; feels
he can build support in parts
of the country where the
-Liberal Party has not been
strong in recent elections,
like this part of Ontario and
in the West.
Mr'. Inglis was one of the 84
people who supported
Eugene Whelan on the first
ballot, but is disappointed
the minister of agriculture
did not receive more support
from the farm sector.
As low man on the totem
pole, Mr. Whelan was
eliminated after the first
ballot.
Graeme Craig of Walton,
another local delegate, also
supported Mr. Whelan on the.
first ballot because of his
farm -centred platform. But
unlike Mr. Inglis, Mr. Craig,
threw his support to Jean
Chretien on the second,
Although. Mr. Craig said he
has nb qualms about ,Mr.
Turner's ' leadership, he
voted for Mr. Chretienon the
second ballot because'of his
emotional appeal' to .the
"little guy" of this country.
But the "unwritten law" of
French -English alternation'
is still a strong factor in the
Liberal party, he said, even •
though it is downplayed, and
he felt that made a dif-
ference to many f the
uelegates. .
Colin Campbell of
Wingham also attended the
convention, .but not as one of
the 3,440 voting delegates.
Without the pressureof
being a delegate he was able
to sit back and enjoy the
"carnival" atmosphere of
the convention.
As someone who attended
the 1968 convention which
chose Pierre Trudeau as
• Liberal leader, Mr. Cam-
pbell noted a world of change
between the two. There were
many more voting delegates
this time around; more press
people (about 3,000 in all)
and more general hoopla
than the 196& version.
Ald three men heard the
candidates' speeches last
Friday night. Mr. Inglis said
he was impressed with Mr.
Turner's performance, while
Mr. Craig said both . Mr.'
Turner and Mr. Chretien
delivered good speeches.
Mr. Campbell said he was
impressed with Mr. Roberts' '
speech and floor demon-
stration.
There was a mood of ex-
citement in all the camps
• prior to those Friday night
speeches, said Mr. Craig.
However after the speeches
many delegates , who
previously had been sup-
porting the five second-tier
candidates, Mr. Whelan, Mr.
Roberts, John Munro, Mark
MacGuigan and • Donald
Johnston, left them and went
to the frontrunners, Turner
and Chretien. •
One of the biggest high-
lights of Mr. Craig's Ottawa
stay was last Thursday
evening's address by
departing Prime Minister
Trudeau to party faithful.
After 16 years as leader, Mr.
Craig said Mr. Trudeau still
can inspire a great emotion-
al response. ..
