Little models of, stately Spanish galleons, speedy schooners, or even fishing tugs. always impress meas tieing a tribute to the ingen- uity of man. How in the world could someone create these tiny craft inside a bottle? The I met a man who had all the answers. George Ful - fit retired from the -meat packing business some years ago. He's now in his eighties - chronologically. In spirit, about 10, going on 11 maybe. His enthusiasm is unbound- ed. And it's mostly funnelled into building miniature ships and getting them into bot- tles. George has more than 200 of them in his rambling Eta bicoke home. He leads you proudly from room to room where the bottled ships sit on shelves, in cabinets, on desks and tables. ' One model- recreates a shipwreck he witnessed off the Cornish coast when he was a boy. Another has a little sailor Sitting on the deck of a .ship. The sailor is working on a microscopic carving which is to go into a bottle! All of these wonders of craftmanship, are done in a basement workship where the feisty Fulfitspends up to 18 hours a day. engrossed in his hobby. • Watching him put the rig- ging on a replica of the "Fly- ing Cloud", I asked how he had the patience and persis- tance to turn out these mini- ature marvels. "I don't look at it sthat way," he told me. "I become completely absorbed. I . talk to the sailors or the pirates as I make them. My wife usedto call down to see who I was talking to. But she's used to it now. The time flies. It's become more than a hobby. It's a second career. And I wouldn't give it up for anything." Then he showed me one of the tricks of the trade. Using a demonstration ship and bottle, he bent down the sails andslowly, very slowly, pushed the ship through the neck of the bottle. Handling what seemed to.be a maze'of threads, he then pulled up the masts and unfurled the sails. Presto! A ship in a bottle! When we went back up- stairs, George showed me the 200th ship he had made. It's a replica of the "Forest .Pride". He thinks it's one of. the best he's done. But he also has a feeling his finest work is yet to come.
