I am not a great country
music fan but let me tell you,
the big awards shows can
learn something ,about the
way the Academy of Country
Music conducts its televised
awards presentations. The
production was • a snappy
little effort that breezed
along like a champion rodeo
rider, a neat little package
wrapped up in its allotted
two hours and lacking the
lengthy boring an-
nouncements Of the winners
and the never-ending thank-
you speeches. A refreshing
change indeed!
There were two highlights
in the show - the presen-
tation of the Pioneer Award
to the incomparable Eddy
Arnold who, on his 66th
birthday, cried his way
through his acceptance
speech, explaining that he
never sang because he
wanted accolades, he just
"wanted to sing". That
velvet voice was responsible
for much fine music to come
out of the country music
world for years; at the
height of his fame he could
have easily made the
transformation to popular
music with a large string
orchestra, had he so chosen.
The other memorable
moments on the awards
show were the Academy's
tribute to Elvis Presley who,
though his greatest fame
was in the pop rock and roll
field, began his career in
country. He received a
special award to be en-
shrined at Graceland, the
Presley estate at Memphis
where Elvis, his mother and
father are buried. Film clips
showed just how talented a
singer Elvis really was
beneath that hype and
sensationalism that made

nim a star. With the best of
singers, he could take Paul
Anka's song, "My Way", and
make it his own and it is not
an easy song to sing. Un-
fortunately, country music's
tribute to Elvis was spoiled
by an attempt at imitating
him by Glen Campbell whose
talent doesn't begin to touch
Presley's.
Alabama, still riding the
high waves, took three' top
awards, for entertainer of
the year, top vocal groilp and
album of the year ("The
Closer You Get"). In the first
category, the biggie of the
year, they defeated Barbara
Mandrell, Willie Nelson, the
Oak Ridge Boys and Hank
Williams Jr.' •
The team of Dolly Parton
and Kenny Rogers won in
two categories for their
"Islands in the Stream". It
was named the single record
of the year and they were
named top duo. The top
female was Janie Fricke
who for years was a backup
singer with others, hardly
ever being acknowledged.
She defeated Crystal Gayle,
Reba McEntire, Barbara
Mandrell and Sylvia to win
that honor. The top male,
Lee Greenwood, defeated
John Anderson, Earl
Thomas Conley, Merle
Haggard and Ricky Skaggs.
Honored as the best new
country performers were
Gus Hardin (that's a girl!)
and Jim Glaser. The song of
the year, an award given to
the composers, was "Wind
Beneath My Wings" and the
Tex Ritter Award for the top
country movie went to
"Tender Mercies", a picture
also honored by the
Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences in
Hollywood.
