I came across a quotation in an Associated Press -wire story recently that I haven't been able to get out of my mind. The story concerned Hollywood film director Blake Edwards, whom I gather has had his ups and downs. Mr. Edwards told his interviewer and I quote: "As Mort Sahl recently told me, survival is the best re- venge." I know what he meant. Anyone who works in a vola- tile, high profile business with a flock of creative egos for colleagues, knows what he meant. Anyone whose work is the subject of public criticism knows what he meant. If a feature film is knocked by the critics and makes mil- lions of dollars at the box of- fice despite its reviews, I suppose that is revenge of a kind. If a politician is shafted byy the media and the voters re-elect him anyway, I sup- pose there is an element of revenge in his survival. But if survival is the best revenge, as Mort Sahl sug- gests, it is because survival isn't really revenge at all. It can't be revenge., because survival tends to be solitary. It doesn't involve anyone else. Survival, after all, is a form of minding. -your own business, living your own life, no matter what is going on around you. The primary definition of the word "survive" offered by the Shorter Oxford Dic- tionary is "to continue to live after the death of another, or after the end or cessation of some thing." But the Oxford adds that the expressed or implied meaning is simply "To remain alive; to live on." Alan Thicke hosts,..special Alan Thicke will host the first annual NHL Awards Special, live from the Har- bour Castle Hilton Conven- tion Centre and telecast on CBC Television Monday, June 4, at 8: 00 p.m. The NHL Awards eclat: A Celebration of Exce ante will serve as a showcase for the presentation of eight ma- jor annual hockey awards: The Jack Adams Award for coaching, the. Calder Mem- orial Trophy .for best rookie, the Hart Memorial Trophy for the most valuable player, the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for most sportsman- ship a gentlemanly con- duct, the Art Ross Trophy for scoring leader, the Frank J. Selke Tr"ophy to 'the forward who best excels at defense, the Vezina Trophy for goal- tending, and the James Nor- ris Memorial Trophy for best defense.- Except for the Vezina Trophy, whose win- ner is selected by them NHL General Managers, and the Adams Award, which is vot- ed by the NHL Broadcasters, judging is handled by the Professional Hockey Writ- ers' Association. Entertainers for The NHL Awards Special are Carroll Baker, the Canadian Brass, and the 20 -Minute Workout team. Carroll Baker will sing. her hit song "I'm So Excited", and the Canadian Brass. will perform a comic musical number with the six young women from the 20 - Minute Workout. The NHL Awards Special is a $200 a plate black -tie event to benefit Diabetes Canada. The evening in- cludes a gala reception be- fore the show, and a black -tie dinner and dance following the presentation of the Awards. SQUEEZE PLAY Be alert for cyclists mak- ing turns across traffic from the right lane, the Ontario Safety League warns motor- ists. And when you make a right turn, be sure not to squeeze a cyclist against the curb. I walked to work the other morning, six miles, most of it up the Don Valley and through Taylor. Creek Park. First of all, I had survived another night. I had lived to see another spring morning. I had survived another Canadian winter. It was a thin, watery kind of a sun at times that morn- ing, but there was no mistak- ing its warmth and veiled promise of another summer. I remember thinking that all we need is another couple of days of this, and the leaves will be out. They're very close to it now. The red - winged blackbirds knew it. This is their season in places like the Don Valley. They were calling their hearts out that morning, because they too had survived. The fact that I had surviv- ed another six mile walk is something I don't sneeze at anymore at 49. And the fact that I could have walked an- other six, would rather have walked another six, than come into the office, is sim- ply more assurance that I have remained alive, that I live on. It is a joyous feeling. I do not live on out of spite. And so if survival is, as Mort Sahl suggests, the best re- venge, then the best revenge is no revenge at all. Listowel Phone 291-3489 Marble floor care Q. We have moved into a home that has some marble flours in the living room. Can you advise late as to how to keep them bright and shiny? They are dull now. Would a floor polisher be good to use on them? So far, only cold water has been used to clean the marble. Thanks for any informa- e tion you can supply. — Eliza- beth W. A. First scrub the floor with clean hot water, and with an abrasive, or use soluble cleaner such as three tablespoons of trisodium phosphate in a gallon of hot water. Then rinse with clear wa ter. When the marble is clean and quite dry, apply one or two coats of colorless ter- razzo sealer. Waxing with a water wax should give a soft sheen and provide additional protection for the marble surface. Q. We have had synthetic carpeting in our apartment for almost a year, but it is al- ready quite soiled with many noticeable stains probably due to our toddler who manages to spill various things on the carpet. We have tried commercial products that are advertised to remove stains, but we have had no success. Do you have any suggestians? — Mrs. G. S. A. Your best solution is to have a reliable carpet clean- er do the job. Stains that have not been taken care of when they are fresh may be impossible to remove. However, profes- sional carpet cleaners have special stain removers which they use in their work. Some stains may be perma- nent. Q. The house we purchased has plastered stucco -type walls and is about 16 years old. The previous owner paneled one wall in the living room. It appears as though the paneling was applied with an adhesive. Our problem is that we want to remove the paneling, but do not know the best pro- cedure to avoid damaging the wall. We will appreciate . your suggestions. — Gail L. F., Wilmington, Ill. A. You will need to pry off the paneling. First, it may help to use a hair dryer to warm the sur- face area on which you are working. This should soften the adhesive, making the paneling easier to remove. If there are areas which are gouged or cracked in the process, you can repair them with patching plaster, then paint or cover with wall- paper. Q. We are, installing dry wall in a new house under construction. We would like to put ceramic tile in the bathrooms. Can this kind of tile be used over dry walls? — M.D.S. A. Yes, but a special adhe- sive is required. A tile dealer can supply complete inform- ation about the adhesive and the installation procedure.
