The case pieces are in a soft gray goatskin lacquer finish. Chairs are by Barcalounger and case pieces by Habersham of Hickory. Black and white plus color equals drama By Barbara Hartung Q. I am moving into a new condominium which I like very much because of the room arrangements. How- ever, the rooms are without much interest and. I wish to create a dramatic effect. I would like some ,bright and striking color combina- tions, but I'm rather unsure of b.ewto-go about chioosing them. Do you have some itteas for me?-S.E.L.' A. Try leafing through lots of "lousing magazines and decorating books to find rooms that are especially appealing. Then do an inven- tory of the ,pictures. What , colors are you always com- ing back to? A decorating color scheme that is highly dramatic is black and white and one color. That color would .be mauve or green or red or any, shade you're in love with. Black and white provides the drama and the .extra color provides the punch.. . In addition, you can use soft neutrals such as sand, taupe and gray as good backgrounds for walls and carpeting with the punchy black and white color for up- holstery', 'case goods and ac- cessories. For still more punch, paint a whole wall the accent color you choose. Q. I have a lovely orange Polish rug (folk design) with black, gray and rust colored animals in it. 1 followed through to purchase a modu- lar piece (chair and otto- man) in orange velvet. Both of these pieces are delightful. However, as a single person, the space I have is small and orange is terribly aggressive. I believe I've made a color error. Have you any_su-ggestions? As a desk, I have a multi- faceted drafting board, with pine green lamp attached. The drafting board is white as is my desk chair. - L.H. A. A lot__depends on how - large your apartment is and ;'how bright orange your chair and ottoman are. If you could paint your walls a soft gray or a beige youmight be able to soften the effect. Will you use the rug on the floor or on the wall? If your apartment has a thick car- peting you might consider the wall. This could be dra- matic and perhaps the chair against the delightful design of the rug would be just right. If you still feel the orange color is too bright, consider a slip cover. It's on the outskirts of the picturesque town of Pic- ton, down near the Bay of Quinte. You can see the cotn- plex from the highway as you drive into Picton past the Maeauley Mountain Conser- vation Area. I'd never heard of it be- fore, or even read 'anything about it. But like everyone else who sees it for the first time, I stared in surprise and admiration. Birdhouse City consists of 92 birdhouses set up on poles over a six acre site. The houses are built to resemble various public buildings and landmarks C in Prince Ed- ward County. For rn exa ,ple, youcan walk around the streets of Picton and see such things as the historic courthouse, the old churches, the fire hall, and so on, then go over to, Bird- house City and see the same thing in a setting that's strictly for the birds! The idea was dreamed up by some of the Macauley staff members. A few years shop and ask about styles and cost. You might be able to slip -cover both pieces fair- ly economically: Don't feel bad, we all mis- calculate. • Decorating our homes is a learning process - and a continuous one. Q. 1 have brown; rust car- peting in my living room and dining area. The walls are white. Two chairs are gold .and one is an avocado color. What color do you suggest for a new sofa and draperies? - R.A. A. To tie your many colors together, it would be pleas- ing if you could find a fabric of gold, brown, rust and avo- cado with a touch awhile. If, you have all solid colors in your upholstery, you might like a print on your sofa. This could be a floral, a paisley, a stripe, a combina- tion floral -stripe, or even a small geometric, depending on your preferences. If you, wish your windows' to recede into the back- ground,. choose white to blend with the walls. If, .in- stead, you'd like to call at- tention ttention to the windows, con- sider the print fabric in per- haps tailored Roman blinds. or Austrian shades. ago they build a few bird - toques during the winter Months, One Of' them was modelled 91 the old Massa- ,Sauga Rotel,, a showplace in the district around 1873. Another was a nearby light- house. , Then they got the notion of gettingthe community in- volved. They began asking people to build additional dwelling places for the many varieties of birdsthat inhabit the region. The idea caught on. Schoolchildren, youth groups, service clubs, cubs, scouts, seniors and business- men build all sorts of model houses of landmarks for what became known as Bird- house City. The architectural students at the local high school went to work. Street signs were put up. It became a planned community With a general store, schools, churches, hotels the whole works! The residents, many of them martins, love the place. It's hard to find' an apartment on Swallow Hill Road. Of course, they're quite well-to-do. They go south in the winter and that sort of thing. There are no taxes. And to think they got all those beautiful houses' for a song! Here's How By Gene Gary Q. When the tank handle is turned in our bathroom, not enough water enters the toilet bowl to, flush it proper- ly. I took off the porcelain tank top and found that when the tank fills, the water only goes up about halfway and then the flow cuts__ off, Is there any way to.4determine how much water should go into the tank? - A. Generally, the incoming .water shuts off when it is about one inch from the top of the overflow tube, the vertical hollow ' piece of metal located slightly to the left of the center of the tank. If the water is not reaching the height, bend the horizon- tal float arm up a little so that the float ball is a couple of inches' higher than it was. Use both hands to make the bend and work Very care- fully so that you do not throw the equipment out of line. Make whatever adjustment is necessary to bring the in- coming water up to the point just short of the top of the overflow tube. If the water rises too high and. begins to flow into the tube, it means Hummel Trade Mark 6 stili in use By James G. McCollam Member, Antique Appraisers Association of America Q. I have a Hummel figur- ine of the Christ Child with the enclosed mark on the bottom. When was it made and what is its value? A. The mark you provided is called Trade Mark 6 and has been used from 1979 to the present. That means that this figurine is still in pro- duction and worth no more than the regular list price of $50. We would like to replace the white cement decking surrounding the pool with a Mexican red t}1e. l won4 r M: there s, any product available to paint an existing coping with a color to match the new tile? - Katharine H. A. Today's concrete stains are solutions that react chemically with the lime in concrete to give permanent coloring. They penetrate the concrete and cannot peel or wear away as a painted sur- face coat can. The color choice is limited -.generally earth 'shades of red, rust, green, tan, brown and black, so this might come in a colo that would blend well wi. the Mexican red tile. However, satisfactory r sults can also be obtainedb using exterior latex pain especially made for maso surfaces. Paints used ove concrete surfaces must b able to resist alkali presen in cement which attack ordinary •oil -base paints There is a wider choice o colors .in these latex mast) ry paints.
