Like most men, the ones I
know anyway, I've never
made a quilt, and don't know
very much about quilts. I've.
watched women making
them and have admired the
way they sew those tiny
stitches. Their patience has
always amazed me.
I've watched my wife
Jenny making a quilt. I
watched her for about two
minutes one day. Then I'd
had enough. I moved on to
something else. It looked like
a tedious task.
But recently I became in-
terested in quilts when I
heard about the Bicentennial
Quilt Contest that's going on.
The winning quilt is to be
presented to the Queen when
she visits Canada later this
year.
Theo, .,I,WaS- in „Btaatford
for a couple of days where
there was a display of quilts
at the Brant County Muse-
um. Jenny and myself went
to see it, and I discovered
why people get hooked on
quilts.
There were quilts hung on
the walls. There were quilts
on beds and cribs. The beau-
tiful antique furnishings in
the museum were enhanced
by them.
Jenny was a good guide.
She explained that it takes
hours and hours to set up the
pieces of a quilt and still star urges her stuntman husband to give up his fob, but he
longer to quilt it. The stitch-
-. ing is an important factor ifcontinues to court death.

Some of the quilts had been. Movies on Channel 6
made over the past year for
the Quilt Contest, but most of
them were precious family
possessions loaned for the
occasion. Some were well
over a hundred years old.
• Patterns have been hand-
ed down from generation to
generation. They have such
descriptive names as Wagon
Wheel, Dresden Plate, and
Wedding Ring.
Some quilts are unique to
one family. There was one
that had names of family
members workkd into it.
Even their dog frisk" was
included.,
As we left the museum, I
was thinking I've never real-
ly noticed the quilts Jenny
has made over the years. I
recalled one on our own bed
at the farm near Penetang-
uishene where we live when
we're not on the road. And I
think there are a couple on
the small beds in the bed-
room where our grandchild-
ren sleep when they come to
visit.
Jenny mentioned that she
is going to make a quilt for
our newest grandson,
Jonathan Maxwell. This
time I'll watch more closely.
She might even let me try
my hand at sewing a few of
those tiny sitiches.
