heft way back in 1949 at New
York's Waldorf Astoria Ho-

Million in prizes has been
awarded for winning re-
cipes.
In keeping with the times,
a new microwave category
was added to the 1984 Bake -
Off, which was held in San
Diego and judged by media
food experts. One hundred
ten finalists from around the
nation competed with origin-
al recipes in five categories.
Eileen Kotval Thorston,
winner of the microwave
category, left with $15,000 in
prize money and a big smile.
Her winning recipe for
"Quick Apple Pan Pan-
cakes" appears below.

seems to run in the Thorston

Dear Louisa:

hope you can help me with,
I'm a good knitter but have a
terrible time reading the
pattern where there „we

confused.
It's alright until I get to the

three sizes. Do you have a
pattern which gives one size
only? A size thirty-eight, and
a plain cardigan.

You are not the only one
who has had this problem,
Mrs. Dryer, even I at times
have made the mistake of
following the directions for
the wrong size!
What I have found to be the
best solution to this problem
is to outline the size being
worked. In other words,
circle with a colored pencil
or ball point pen, each set of
figures or directions that
pertain to the size you are
knitting. I am sure you will
find that this helps' tremend-
ously. If . you are" working
from a graph style pattern,
again just outline the size
you are making.
The pattern I sent Mrs.
-Dryer 4s---nlain..._stocking-
stitch V-neck raglan style
cardigan, knit with a double
knitting weight of wool.
Leaflet No. 6804 has instruc-
tions for bust sizes thirty-two
through to and including size
forty-two inches. This is a
good basic cardigan pattern,
and so often needed in the
large sizes.
Another cardigan design I
have in a size thirty-eight is
Leaflet No. 6737. This one
calls for a 4 -ply fingering
wool and is knitted in the
raglan style also, but from
the neck down, dividing for
the sleeves after the raglan
shapings have been com-
pleted. The back and fronts
are then all knitted in one,
and the sleeves are then
knitted on four needles, thus
eliminating seams. An added
touch for a classic cardigan,
are the tiny cables that are
worked along the raglan
shapings. The same leaflet
also has the same cardigan
in children's sizes six tiro'
twelve years.

Sleeveless vests, whether
they slipover or button -up
are always porular at any
time of year. Light knit or
crochet provide both warmth
and elegance and are quick
and easy to make.
This week's pattern No.
7207 or any other leaflet
mentioned, can be obtained
by sending 75 cents PLUS a
stamped self addressed re-
turn envelope. If you do nom
have a stamp or envelope,
please enclose an extra 50
cents to coverthe cost of
handling and print your
name and address.
