Over the years, thestucco has cracked at the corners of the windows and in various other places near ground level, it is beginning to break away. We were wondering what would be necessary to re- move the stucco In order to recover the walls with some other material such as wood siding? We also would like to install some insulation at the same time. Can you indicate which type of backing would be best for the insulation? — Ephram J. A. Yes, wood siding can be installed over a stucco sur- face, but it is not practical. A builder friend tells me that it is difficult because the stucco surface varies in thickness, even though it may look smooth. He tells me it would be much easier to cover stucco with alumi- num siding, which does not take nearly as much nailing. I suggest foil or insulating paper might be suitable to use with aluminum siding, but check first with the aluminum dealer to find what kind of insulation he may recommend. Another suggestion is to use mineral fiber shingles undercoursed with insulat- ,ii g backer boards in residing your house. H `e are some. sugges- tions from the National Oak Flooring Manufacturers As, sociation for removing dark Stains in floors. The bro- chure says the same method is also recommended for ani- mal stains. Clean the stains or spots and surrounding area with NO.. 1 steel wool and a good floor cleaner or mineral spirits. If the spot remains, then sand with fine sand- paper, feathering out three or four inches into the sur- rounding area. If the spot is still present, apply an oxalic acid solution, made by mixing one ounce of oxalic acid' in one quart of water. But caution. This is poison. Use rubber gloves and handle with care. Let the solution stand one hour, then rinse with clear water. A second treatment may be helpful if the spot still refuses to yield. 11 the second application of oxalic acid fails, sand the area with No. 00 sandpaper and apply a matching finish, feathering out into surround- ing floor area. Let dry. Buff. lightly with No. 00 steel wool, and apply a second coat of finish. Let dry and wax. If the stubborn spot is still visible, the only remaining remedy is to replace the af- ected flooring. Oxalic acid is a bleaching agent. Whenever it is used, the treated. floor area will. probably have to be stained and refinished to match the original color. Decor Score on approved credit. By Barbara Hartung Q. It is time to redecorate our living room which is tra- ditional. I have an Oriental rug 1 want to keep but every- thing else needs to be re- covered — a sofa, love seat, and two chairs. 1 have had a green and gold fabric on the sofa and love seat and -green on the chairs with white walls and sheer draperies. Please'suggest a new color sehmt-,,,that would go with my Omental and be slightly more colorful. My rug has beige, brown, blue-green and gray in it. I do not like•the new mauve colors and pink. — T.B. A. Soft salmon would be a good choice for the walls. A stripe of teal blue, rust, sal- mon and beige could be used on your sofa and love seat and for draperies. The teal blue or rust in a solid fabric would be effective for your chairs. Off-white ceiling, wood- work, doors and window frames together with white lamp shades would give a pleasing contrast to the warm colors. Q. I'm looking for a con- temporary color scheme for a tiny room I'm converting to my office -guest room. I need a bedspread and win- dow treatment. I have the bed, night stand, dresser, desk and lounge chair in the room. I want a tailored, crisp look that is neither mascu- line nor feminine since I want guests of both sexes to be comfortable — A.M.B. A. How about a khaki and red color scheme? The more red in the room, the more drama ; the more khaki, the more calm the effect. Pale beige walls and car- peting would provide a good background for a tailored khaki spread edged in wide bands of brilliant red. Top the bed with lots of red bol- sters and pillows, and a khaki one, too. At the windows, use Roman blinds in the khaki fabric with red bands. Upholster your chair in a print combining the two PLEASING CONTRAST—Color and design are intro- duced in this living room with a stripe fabric of teal blue and rust covering upholstered pieces. Stripes combine well with other patterns, including fiorals such as this Oriental rug. Room was designed by Pa- tricia Gaylor. I am redecorating my bedroom and want to install lace curtains at my windows and sliding glass door. I do not need privacy because my bedroom is on the second Boor overlooking a canyon that is private. I want to do the work myself— How should the curtains be hung? 1 have an eclectic dec- orating plan in the bedroom --- some antiques, some re - productions, but mostly an Old World look. — S.C. A. Why don't you install a simple wood drapery roar? You could then buy yards of lace, stitch them together so you have the fullness you need in the width. Sew large wooden cafe rings to the top edge of the lace. Allow at least an 8- to 12 - inch hem at the floor to as- sure a luxurious -16-5k.
