Seems that our native
peoples aren't going to be
giyen the right to govern
themselves after all. Not yet
anyhow. And while the pro-
Vinces which balked at the
idea at that Native Rights
conference the other day
didn't really say so, it was
evident they thought that our
Indians and Inuits had
neither the talent nor the dis-
cipline needed for self-gov-
ernment.
But as I watched the pro-
ceedings of that conference
on nay TV set, I found myself
recalling a story told me a
few years ago by a former
RCMP officer who in his
days of duty had once been
stationed in the high Arctic
at a place 'called Rankin's
Inlet. It goes without saying
The Legend of
Tom Longboat
He broke all the records
and all the rules. He was
dubbed The Human Dyna-
mo, The Onodaga Wonder,
the Bronze Mercury, and
most commonly, Wildfire.
The life story of Tom Long-
boat, one of the world's great
long-distance runners, is
dramatized in the 60 -minute
special, Wildfire, Tuesday,
May 29 at 8:00 p.m. on CBC
Television.
From the rural back roads
of his home on Six Nations
Reserve, near Brantford,
Ontario, to the gruelling
track of the 1908 Olympics,
Longboat raced his way to
fame and captured the
-'hearts and bets of racing
fans around the world.
The drama opens when the
lanky athlete wins _a local
race and is spotted by fast-
_ _talking _orarneter__ Harry
Rosenthal, played by Cana-
dian poet Irving Layton.
Rosenthal starts Longboat,
played by Terry Harford on
his career as an aniateitr
athlete, Winning • the iget
Boston Marathon a full five
minutes ahead of his nearest
rival (a record still held on
the old course).
Before long, he is lured by
Tom Flanagan (Allan
Royal), a charismatic Irish-
man. Longboat proves to be
tireless and unbeatable and
soon becomes the toast of the
international racing world,
often winning purses in the
six figures and regularly
drawing standing -room -only
crowds to Madison Square
Gardens.
Flanagan guards his new
client like a prize race horse,
even finding him a wife -
Lauretta Maracle, played by
Fern Henry-Pearsons. De-
spite his excellence, the In-
dian hero must still endure
the racial slurs of his time
but is most beaten when he
returns home from the war,
where he served as a dis-
patch runner, to find his wife
remarried and move away.
Canadian runner Bruce
Kidd, author of a book on
Tom Longboat, acted as con-
sultant on the film, and
coached the film's runners,
particularly Terry Harford
in the role of the great
athlete. Says Kidd, "Tom
Longboat was one of the
greatest athletes the world
has ever seen. Even when he
lost, Longboat was a coura-
geous competitor, never giv-
ing up without a ferocious
struggle and that wonderful
smile of his." Bruce Kidd
also makes his acting debut
in the film, playing long-time
rival, Dorando Pietri.
Wildfire was filmed on lo-
cation at Black Creek Pio-
neer Village, Doon Pioneer
Village, Wentworth Pioneer
Village, Toronto Old City
Hall, Whitehern Historical
House, the old Massey man-
sion, Gooderham and Worts
Distillery and Casa Loma.

this Mountie for lOng before
sensing that he "'tad a Pro-
found respect 'for the Inuit
way of life.
"So far as I was aware
they never used violence to
settle an argument," he
said; and then he told me of
the time when the elders of
the group had invited him to
see how a long standing
quarrel could be settled with
no thought of coming to
blows.
Seems that two youngonen
of the group wanted the
same young woman, and,the
passion in each was such
that the passing of time
235 Elora St. Harriston

hadn't weakened it. So, as
Was the tradition here, there
vgas nothing for them to do
but let the tribe settle the af-
fair for them. So one night
every man in the tribe met in
the whatever sort of igloo
they had up there then for
community meetings, and
they sat around the wall to
form a circle about the two
young men whose contention
was to be resolved.
Ina trial of this kind, my
Mountie friend explained
that a tribal drum hangs in
the very centre sof the igloo,
and when the signal is given
him, the first young Man be-
gins to beat the drum in a ri-
tual as old as the tribe itself.
First he strikes the drum at

the man pleading his cause
before them by reciting
everything that be can think
of that might be in his favor,
and belting the drum as he
goes along to add the ring of
greatness to it.
And after he has finished,
the second young man does
the same. He too reminds
them of his past accomplish-,
merits to the beat of the tri-
bal drum. And after it is all
over the tribe puts its head
together so to speak, and de-
cides which of the young men
is to get the girl. And- once
the decision is announced
there is no thought of argu-
ment or appeal to a higher
court. In the case described
by this ex -Mountie at least
the two men embraced after-
ward and the session broke

What must they think now of
our venerable troiAltian of ,

ling the Ober guy over a
cliff? Or, it tbe, argumexit is
on a grander,scale, if it
should be over apiece of real

stance or the Goland
Heights, what must the Eski-
mo think of our .glorious ri-

by simply selecting the finest
ofoUr young men to fight it
out for us with napalme and
rattehikeguns and flying
battleships until they kill a.
suitable number of simlliat
young men and others on the
other side?
Anyhow, it seems we're
still going to insist that the
Inuits of the high Arctic be
governed by our laws, not
theirs. And we will probably
keep sending them mission-
aries too.
