The Brussels Legion pipes and, drumsled the Canadian Legion color parties and contingent: The Americans said this participation makes their parade, as this year the Canadian contingent, in- cluding the Canadettes, made up at least one-third of the. parade. That evening the VFW and American Legion put on an excellent banquet for their members, officials and guests, followed by a dance. At the banquet there were many presentations, ac- companied by much mirth. Willis Hall of Wingham was singled out for several awards. He was made a life member of the American VFW, with a special car Iicence plate, and an honorary member of the Air National Guard, 191st Fighter Interceptor Force. The Air National Guard presented Mr. Hall with a special mug, of which it was reported there were only 36 in the country. Now there are only 35, as the 36th rests in Wingham, in Canada. Mr. Hall has been the mainspring in getting other branches of the Legion and Naval Association involved in the American Loyalty Day program and it was in recognition of his efforts and those of the members of Branch 180, Wingham, that the honors were bestowed. Brussels Reeve. Calvin Monter and Standish Mayor Jack Stoner exchanged proclamations of sister city status for their communh es. All departed for their homes Sunday afternoon, arriving back in Wingham that evening.. Some observations about the Standish area: unem- ployment in the area is ab Alt 20 per cent; the American farmer is as hard-pressed as his Canadian counterpart; The bureaucracy and organization there has a different structure and appears to be more under the control and restraint -of the electorate. For example, municipalitiesdetermine and tell ''the educational authorities how much money they will contribute. Teacher salaries are one-third lower and there probably are other differences in educational standards and curriculum content. Many Americans in the area have Canadian an- cestry and they were warm and gracious as hosts.
