GORDON GREEN To most of us it seems hard to believe that Watergate is now ten years behind us, so vivid are our memories of that affair. And of, my own memories of thaLdramatic time none is more vivid than that of Rev. Billy Hargis, the California evangelist who launched an impassioned campaign to defend the pres- ident. "He that is without sin, let him cast the first stone!" Hargis kept shouting. And he insisted that every God-fear- ing American should write a letter of loyalty to Nixon im- mediately, and that the let- ter should be wrapped around a stone and mailed to their senator or their con- gressman or to some other Washington politician hypo- critical enough to suppose that the President had an ob- ligation to tell the truth about the Wateri te break-in, and sundry other secret bits of politicking allegedly done for the good of the nation. There were of course many other touching dis- plays of support for Mr. Nixon back then made by various groups of the evangelically minded, and these included picketing, marches and public demon- strations. So what if the President may have got him- self elected by villifying his political enemies? He was still the arch foe of atheism and left-wing agitators, and student demonstrations and pornography and lewdness in literature, wasn't he? And he was still the champion of the old-time religion, still the shining hope of warding off the delusion of Communism too, even if he did go to Mos- cow and China for a little holiday sometimes when the climate got too hot in Wash- ington or San Clemente. Always when 1 cast a stone or two of my own at these great evangelists who for the past quarter century have been Cadillacing and jetting around the country trying to, Big Top Talent 13 Sports 7D, 4D Italian Movie 57 12:30 News 11 This Business of Far- ming 10 Herald of Truth 3 Sports 5D 12:45 Town and Country 11 1:00 Webster 13 Baseball: Atlanta at Montreal 10. And I'll always remember the dear woman who wrote to scold me for my ridicule of the Rev. Hargis, and who de- •clared that if John Wesley himself stepped down from his place at the right hand of God to preach again, I would call him a charlatan too. I would not. I might have some reservations about Wesley's directions about how to get to heaven but I have always had a profound respect for his courage and conscience as a reformer. When Wesley was in Ameri- ca in 1735 he saw at once the horrors of slavery and he spoke out against it with all the fervour he could muster. Called slave -owners man - stealers, "the worst of thieves," he said, "in com- parison , of whom highway robbers and housebreakers are innocent!" He wrote a book against slavery and denied church membership to anyone who persisted in holding a slave. He exhibited the same courage back home in Eng- land when he spoke out against overbearing mine and mill owners. Compare that burning concern with the attitude of our modern million dollar a week Bible thumpers, who when asked why they seem to have little or nothing to say about the abject poverty about them or the exploitation of the unfor- tunate, are apt to proest that they are not called upon to be social reformers. "Our mission is to save souls!" they will tell you proudly. "Once we have America on its knees, there will be no more social evils!" Which sounds very saintly and noble, and I might be in- clined to believe it if I didn't have to rememver that the great Rev. Billy Graham had Mr. Nixon down on his knees many, many times before Watergate.
