Three men will go on trial
for involuntary man-
slaughter in the deaths of
three people while filming a
movie in the summer of 1982.
Actor Vic Morrow and two
Vietnamese children he was
carrying lost their lives in a
film segment when a
helicopter crashed and the
whirling propeller struck the
trio as they were fleeing a
manufactured Vietnamese
village. The movie, Twilight
Zone, is now being shown in
theatres and on Pay TV.
Director John Landis,
Paul Stewart, who was in
charge of special effects, and
the pilbt of the helicopter,
Dorcey Wingo, were accused
of causing the accident,
Landis because he "set up
the combination of cir-
cumstances", Stewart
because his special effects
"went wrong" and Wingo
because he was hovering the
helicopter too close to the
scene of action. Two other
men were acquitted, one the
associate producer, the other
the production manager who
hired the child performers.
The latter came under fire
earlier because the
children's parents claimed
they were not warned of the
dangers involved in filming
the picture and the children
were working in the middle
of the night which was
illegal. The judge, however,
did not feel the late hour was
a contributing factor in the
deaths of the children.
This final decision ends
five weeks of testimony
before a judge in Los
Angeles. Charged with gross
negligence, the three will
,appear May 8 for arraign-
ment. If convicted, they
could face maximum
penalties of six years in
prison.
Landis was rapidly
becoming a top director in
the film industry. Since
Twilight Zone, he has
directed Michael Jackson's
award-winning video,
Thriller.
