There have been many

scribed to the theory, "To

you must be beautiful on

Howeverothereis: proba-
bly none quite so beautiful
or so faithful to this adage
as CYNTHIA SIKES,. the
stunning brunette who por-
trays Dr. Annie Cavenero
on NBC's "ST. ELSE-
WHERE.;'
"I really do believe that
beauty comes from with-
in," says Cynthia. "But I
mean it literally. Itstarts,
and has a lot to do with
how you feel about your-
self, but it has even more
to do with taking care of
yourself, from the inside as
well as from the outside.
"It's taking responsibili-
ty for your health and
knowing that your general
condition has more to do.
with how you look than any
beauty routine in the
world."
Although you may know
Cynthia from her many
television commercials, as
well as for her portrayal of
Sandy Swanson on the
nighttime soaper "FLAM-
INGO ROAD," it was her
roleas a doctor on "St.
Elsewhere" that really
changed her life by intro-
ducing her to a whole new
way of living.
"I was always getting
sick," confesses Cynthia,
"and just feeling dragged
out and tired all the time.
And I knew that the way 1
felt was reflected in the
way I looked.
"Well," she continues,
"because of the research I
had to do for my part on
the show, I began to learn a
great deal about preven-
tive medicine, nutrition
and the importance of diet
and exercise."
One of the first steps
Cynthia took was to elimi-
nate sugar and most dairy
products from her diet and
to concentrate on meals
consisting mainly of fresh
vegetables, chicken and
fish, with very little red
meat.
"I was truly amazed at
the difference in myself,"
she says. "My skin took on
a whole new glow and my
hair, which used to be so
limp and lifeless, suddenly
had body and shine.
"In a sense I'm trying to
purify my body through nu-
trition and the changes are
truly astonishing. I need
less sleep and I have more
energy than I ever thought
possible." •

Face1ift for
problem walls
Q. I live in an old apart-
ment that has rather badly
scarred walls. I would like
to make the space attrac-
tive but I'm -not sure where
to start. I need to do con-
siderable cleanup and
painting "and add floor
coverings.
Please suggest some in-
teresting and dramatic
ideas for my new but old
home. — R.R.
A. You might be inspired
by,the work of two interior
designers from Swarth-
more, Penn., Jane Banik
and Rena Cumby. They
were working with a client
who needed a space to
work at home — other than
the dining room table. The
designers covered walls in

marked walls. The plastic
fabric is also good for its
sound -absorbing qualities
and its durability.
Choose a deep, bold color
for your walls to achieve a
rich look. Paint the wood-
work a crisp white for con-
trast. Decorate with the
wall color and white in fab-
rics for the floor and at the
windows — or add ,several
more colors to your color
scheme.
Another trick for bad
walls — cover with light
bamboo fencing for an es-
pecially interesting tex-
ture. Woven beach mats
stapled to the wall also are
good cover-ups.
Q. I have stripped down an
old secretary desk that had a
very heavy, dark finish on it.
The natural wood is beatiful
and I want to keep it this
way but I feel I need some
sort of finish to protect it.
What should I use? —R.P.
A. Several coats of varn-
ish Will protect your piece.
However, if you want a rich
patina (although not a heavy,
protective finish) many
coats of linseed oil will do
the trick. Refinishers sug-
gest a cup of linseed oil to
two tablespoons of mineral
spirits or turpentine and tea-
spoon of Japan drier. Rub
this mixture on with a cotton
pad as you would furniture
polish. Wipe and rub and
wipe and rub some' more,
repeating the procedure
over several months.
DRAMATIC STATEMENT—Naugahyde sheaths the walls in this at-home office

cented with white woodwork and accessories. Room was designed by Jane Banik

When it comes to
cosmetics, this super beau-
ty has found that her new
diet means using fewer
products and spending less
time on beauty routines.
"I have combination
skin," reports Cynthia,
"and it is sensitive to most
perfumes, so I try to use
products that are fra-

from Clinique and Aida
Grey. Also, I give myself a
facial about once a week

"I have found," she adds,

I use a mint pore cleanser
which is very mild and less
drying than most soaps."

MICROWAVE MAGIC'
Of cabbages
and kings
By Desiree Vivea
"The time - has come,"
the Walrus 'said, "to talk of
many things;
"Of shoes and ships and
sealing wax,
"Of cabbages and kings."
You may recall these
lines from your childhood
— from a little poem titled
"The Walrus and the Car-
penter." It is recited to
Alice by Tweedledee him-
self, in Lewis Carroll's
"Through the Looking
Glass."
Sorry, but we're going to
have to skip the shoes, the
ships, the sealing wax and
the kings. In a column of
this size, there is just bare-
ly enough room to talk
about cabbages!
What is there to say
about cabbage?, Quite a lot,
actually. For starters, the
vegetable comes in three
varieties: white, red and
savoy. White cabbage (it's
really a pale green color) is
the type most commonly
used in America. It is made
into coleslaw, sauerkraut
and cabbage rolls. And it's
high in vitamins A and C.
If you're on a diet, you
might be interested to
know that a cup of the
stuff, sliced, has a mere 17
calories! (Although I don't
know of anyone who'd care
to eat a whole cup of plain
raw cabbage — it's much
tastier cooked up in a deli-
cious recipe, such as those
listed below.)
Your market may also
stock Chinese cabbage,
also called bok choy — but
this is not true cabbage.
When you're out cabbage
shopping, look for heads
which are firm and hard. ,
They should feel heavy,
have a good color and no
external blemishes.
A cabbage will stay

SUPER BEAUTY HINT
Everyone knows that
part of maintaining a
youthful appearance is tak-
ing care of your face —
staying out of the sun,
using plenty of moisturizer
and avoiding soap.
But did you know that
your hands are one of the
first places to show your
age? And that the skin in
this area is even more deli-
cate than on your face? It's
true. And when you think
about all the abuse your
hands go through on a daily
basis, it's amazing they
hold up as well (and as
long) as they do.
Now skin care experts
are beginning to develop
programs for the hands. In
fact the latest research
shows that "facials" used
on a regular basis on the
backs and palms of the
hands keep them softer and
younger looking, help to
avoid age spots and wrin-
kles, and de-emphasize
prominent age -telling
veins.
To begin caring for your
hands, try a monthly facial
that begins with a mask to
stimulate circulation
(great for women over 50
who have a tendency
toward stiffness due to
some types of arthritis).
This should be followed by
a mask that replenishes
and restores moisture, es-
pecially one that contains
aloe vera juice or gel.
Any products you nor-
mally use on your face will
work well on your hands,
or you can try this recipe
for a once -a -week hand -
beautifying treatment.
