"CATARACTS AND
yOVRR PET"
A cataract is defined as
opacity 9f the Iens of the eye,
obits supporting capsule. Let
us first take a brief lesson in
the anatomy of the eye be-
fore we go further. The
"lens" is a gelatinous mass
held in a transparent cap-
sule. The lens is located im-
mediately behind- the iris
(colored portion) of the eye,
and its function is to sharply
focus light rays on the retina
(the light sensitive nerve
layer on the back of the eye-
ball). Normally, the lens and
its capsule are completely
transparent and light is
readily transmitted through
them.
In cataract formation,
changed) take place in the
lens or capsule which make
these structures more opa-
que than normal. Light is re-
flected back toward the front
of the eye rather than pass-
ing freely through the lens.
Sudden blindness from cata-
racts is rare since these
changes usually take place
very gradually.
There are two basic forms
of cataracts: developmental
and degenerative. Develop-
mental cataracts result from
defects in the formation and
growth of the lens, in the em-
bryo. These include congeni-
tal cataracts (those an ani-
mal is born with) and juven-
ile cataracts (those that oc-
cur early in life). In most
cases of developmental cata-
racts, the whole lens or cap-
sule is not involved; and of-
ten, only one eye is affected.
Juvenile cataracts usually
occur in animals less than
five or six years of age. De-
generative cataract*, occur
as a result of aging, injuries
to the lens, or because of
some severe systemic dis-
eases such as diabetes.
The first clinical sign of
cataract development can be
__. seen as a bluish or greyish
color it},,the mil, of, the eye
rather than the normal jet
black color. This often be-
gins as color change in only a
small part of the lens. As far
as the pet is concerned, in
the early stages of cataract
formation, the sensation
would be similar to looking
out a window covered by a
fine sheer curtain. Light can
be seen, but shapes are hazy
and out of focus.
As the cataracts progress,
the sheer curtain effect
grows dense and less light
reaches the retina. The lens
becomes more solid and
loses its focusing capabil-
ities. Eventually, if the ani-
mal lives long enough, the
eye or eyes become blind and
the anirhal bumps into
things, may fall or cannot
catch his ball, and may be
reluctant to move due to
fear.
For the present, the most
effective cure for cataracts
is surgical removal of the af-
fected lens. A dog with a cat-
aract in one eye only is not
helped much by surgery if
the other eye is normal. If
both eyes are involved and
blindness interferes with a
normal life, surgery is indi-
cated.
Surgery should be per-
formed by a veterinarian ex-
perienced with this type of
surgery or a specialist in
veterinary ophthalmology
and is generally quite suc-
cessful. Animals do. not re-
quire corrective contact
lenses or artificial implanted
lenses after surgery since
' they do not need to have the
acute eyesight of people who
must read or maintain em-
ployment. At the best of
times, a pet's eyesight is not
as good as his master's. Pets
are slightly nearsighted, but
have a much better ability to
detect motion than we do.
If you suspectcataract
formation in your pet, have
your veterinarian do a com-
plete eye exatnination and
then be guided by his recom-
mendations regarding the
advisability of surgery.
