I don't pretend to know a
lot about football, but the
other day when T was taking
a three-week supply of news-
papers out of the faM1131
room I noticed where an AV
American quarterback,
Steve Young, signed a con
tract with a team in Los
Angeles for '$40 million over
a 43 -year period.
I figured the kid has to be
22 or 23 years old. In 2027,
that would make him 65 or 66
years old. That seems old for
a quarterback to me, but
what do I know? If he eats
sensibly and takes Geritol, it
could happen.
When I mentioned this to
my son he said a lot of foot-
ball contracts offered big
bucks on a long-term basis.
He said "Magic" Johnson of
the Lakers has a 25 -year deal
worth $25 million and Dave
Winfield off the Yankees will
be paid $15 million over the
next 10 years.
He also reminded me of
how I discouraged him from
playing football because
there was no future and no
money in it.
Children have a wonderful
talent for remembering
every lousy word of advice
you gave them, but none of
the good stuff. I had a feeling
I was about to hear a replay
of my more forgettable lec-
tures.
"You wanted me to work
for Ma Bell, rememver? You
said there was security in the
phone company ... especial-
ly when there was a mono-
poly.
Then you pushed for me
to be a teacher. You said
children would always be in
great supply in this country.
The demand for English tea-
chers would always be with
us. That, was two years be-
fore the English teacher
glut.
"Then you got the idea I s
oi>.ld go into t e automobile
industry. You said Ameri-
ca's affair with the big car
would never be over, but
would take me right into re-
tirement."
",':re you finished?'' I'ask-
ed.
"No. You told me politics
was dull and there weren't
• any perks. Besides, the pres-
idency didn't, lead to any-
thing. If I wanted excite-
ment, I should go into the
wave of the future ... like
selling underground nuclear
ters.
"You told me computers
were a fad like the a hoop
and the mood ring, but if I
could figure out a way to
carry 78 rpm records without
breaking them, I could write
my own ticket."
Some mothers are lucky.
They raise their sons to be
65 -year-old quarterbacks
who take their $1.3 million a
year, their Social Security
benefits and .their Grecian
Hair Formula royalties and
live the good life.
With my luck, my kid
would suit up for the game in
2027 and Los Angeles
wouldn't be there.
CBC PRESENTS
A BREAKTHROUGH
IN VIDEO
Songs by Leonard Cohen
weave a magical video fan-
tasy around the guests in a
grand old hotel, in the half-
hour experimental music vi-
deo album, "I Am a Hotel",
on CBC Television Monday,
May 7, at 9:30 p.m. Cohen
himself plays the seedy but
benevolent resident spirit of
the hotel who somehow
seems able to bring people
together. Toller Cranston, in
his first dramatic role, plays
the busy hotel manager with
no time for his beautiful
gypsy wife (Ann Ditchburn).
There's the hot-blooded bell-
y (Robert Desrosier) and
the recipient of his passion,
the shy but willing chamber
maid (Claudia Moore). The
troubled young lovers
(Daniel Allman and
Samantha Logan) seem to
exist in tandem with their
older selves, the retired ad-
miral (Leo Leyden) and the
elegant diva (Celia Franca).
One by one their stories un-
fold, with Cohen providing
the mysterious link through
his songs. He, too, has his
tale of love lost and love re-
gained, as he reminisces
about the elusive Suzanne
(A'berta Watson).
Produced by Blue Memor-
ial Video, in association with
CBC and CHUMCity, I Am a
Hotel represents a concep-
tual breakthrough in video.
The loose dramatic script by
Mark Shekter ties the songs
together with evocative ele-
ments of fantasy and more
than a little sensuality.
