The tournament was sponsored by the Canadian Oldtimers' Hockey Associa- tion and consisted of over 30 teams, the majority being from Canada, but several were Aitierieran "-mu there' was one Finnish team. The facilities are located on the bay in St. Petersburg and included a semi -pro, baseball stadium as well as a beautiful 6,000 seat arena. Although the ice surface was quite large, the icemakers certainly could have used some training from their counterparts in this area. Wingham had the honor of opening the tournament in a game against the Edmon- ton "Prime Evils". The Rockers' skaters were certainly "up" for this game as they outscored the team from the West to the tune of 13-0. Wingham's defence, along with its goaltenders, Wayne Drury and Barry Ireland, stifled Edmonton's attacked whenever they threatened. In its second game played the morning of April 19, Wingham relaxed somewhat and came out on the losing end of a 5-3 score. Hampton, New Brunswick, ,handed the Rockers the loss. The line of Davies, Jim English and Bill Tolton scored all three Wingham goals with each player pick -IO - three: points.' In a second game played April 19, the Rockers shrugged off the 85 -degree Fahrenheit heat and downed a team from Morpeth, On- tario, by a 5-2 count. Tim Tolton, English •with two, John Fryfogle and George Skinn did the scoring for the Rockers. The CORA hosted a dinner and dance for all the team members and their wives that evening. A huge ballroom, aptly named the Coliseum, was the scene as the CORA not only provided food and drink, but also distributed $10,000 in door prizes to the capacity crowd. Wingham's English was the lucky recipient of one dozen Cooper hockey sticks and Sharon Skinn and Mary Houghton were delighted to receive cheques for $100 each. Friday, April 20, saw a return to the hockey action as Wingham and Glen Cairn, Ontario, lined up for the semi-final match of their two divisions. Although Glen Cairn won the game 4-1, it actually was much closer than the score indicates. The Rockers actually carried the play throughout most of the game but were unable to beat Comeau in the Glen Cairn goal more than once. This relegated Wingham to the third position in the combination of two divisons for which the players received a bronze medal. This tournament con- cluded the hockey season for the Wingham Rockers, This must be considered the most successful season to date for the the team not only in the number of games played and victories, but also in- the number of acquaintances made and renewed during the past winter. The players involved in this season would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped make the year a success. Special thanks go to Coach Doug Neil and the wives and friends who spurred theni on and encouraged them when needed. For the record, these are the statistics for the year for the Wingham Rockers: games played, 54; wins, 31; losses, 18; and ties, five.
