Don't use garden
rade on
Q. The cartfeting in our
apartment has that matt-
ed -down texture, probably
as the result of steam
cleaning. It is not wool, but
the fabric is in fair condi-
tion except for the fact
that the pile has been af-
fected.
I've heard that a brisk
rubbing with a short -
toothed garden rake would
improve the situation. I
would appreciate your
comments before I do
something that might ruin
it altogether. — Manny K.,
Scottsdale, Ariz.
A. This condition is usu-
ally caused by carpet
cleaners that get the car-
pet too wet.
It may be impossible to
restore. However, first try
brushing with a stiff bristle
brush. If this does not do
the job, try going over a
small area at a time with a
steam iron, holding the
iron just above the carpet
but not touching it. Then
brush well.
There is a rake made,
usually used on shag car-
peting, which you might
try if the other methods
don't work. But not a gar-
den rake. Hope this will be
of help to you.
Q. I am planning to put
on new roof on my mobile
home, which was manufac-
tured in 1971. It is 24 -by -60
feet. Would like to know if
asbestos roofing shingles
are too heavy, or should I'
reroof with .024 new white
a-innaiaum aad two inches
of insulation. — Willliam, I.,
El Cajon, Calif.
A. In California, state
law requires that you must
obtain a permit from the
Department of Housing if
you make any roof changes
on mobile homes manufac-
tured after Sept. 15 1958
There is a branch of this
department in the state
building in San Diego. Then
you could use asbestos
shingles, or fiberglass or
whatever material you.
choose.
You may even want to
give a small pitch to the
roof which offers better
drainage than a flat sur-
face.
Q. Some time ago a 'sim-
ple solution to the problem
of swallows and other
birds nesting in the roof
eaves appeared in your
column. I have forgotten
carpet
the solution and a sudden
need for it has developed.
— Darrell A.M., Lake San
Marcos, Calif.
A. A white foamy com-
pound which makes the
surface sticky but not
stringy to entangle the
bird's feet is available in
aerosol containers and in
bulk, the latter being ap-
plied with a caulking gun.
The product is harmless to
both animal and plant life.
Another suggestion is
use of a spray, primarily
made for trees but also
adaptable „for buildings.
White when first applied, it
quickly becomes transpar-
ent. It is said to be effec-
tive against all birds, in-
cluding pigeons, starlings,
blackbirds, sea gulls and
swallows, and even repels
rodents and snakes.
Another material is a
paste which is applied with
a special caulking gun, and
it is said to be approved by
humane authorities. It
comes in cartridges, each
sufficient for approximate-
ly 60 lineal feet of surface,
and it is also supplied in 10 -
gallon pails and 40 -pound
drums. Applied in a single
ribbon on narrow projec-
tions, or in zigzag fashion
on wider surfaces, it is
claimed to be effective
against all birds, but with-
out injury to the birds. One
application should last a
year.
Suggest you check large
garden nursery shops or
stores ;hat specialize in do-
it -yourself materials, prod-
ucts
and tools.
Q. Our house is 25 years
old and the putty on much
of the window glass frames
is cracking, separating and
falling off.
What is the best method
of softening the old hard
putty so that we can put
new putty on the windows?
Would 'appreciate any gui-
dance you may give us. —
Henry P.K.
A. Hard, dry putty that
seems almost impossible to
remove will usually come
off easily if it is first coat-
ed with lacquer thinner.
Use a small brush and
apply enough to soak the
putty. Then wait a few
minutes for the lacquer to
penetrate. The putty then
should lift off easily with a
sharp chisel or a putty
knife.
