It is always encouraging
when news comes out that
the outside world is doing
something more to help
those with limited access to
the things most of us take for
granted. We , have; for 30
years, watched television
wish little thought of -those
who cannot see what we see
or hear what we hear. A few
years ago, someone with a
good brain and a caring
heart designed a system
whereby the hearing im-
paired could watch and
'hear' television by means of.
a special decoder. Some
dramas and situation
comedies have been using
the system for some time
now.
But now comes. good news
from the Canadian Broad-
casting Corporation that . the
late-night' news show, The
National, will be closed
captioned. Beginning this
month, The National, at 10
weeknights and 11 weekends,
and The National Update,
weekdays at 11, will be
presented in written form on
the screen. The captions will
run simultaneously with the
spoken word, so there will be
no confusion with either the
hearing impaired or those
with normal hearing. The
news for the deaf will be
prepared' in , advance and
stories will be slightly
condensed and 'contain
visual pauses.
About two million
Canadians have some im-
pairment of hearing, of
these, almost 400,000 need
TV captions.
Though we are up to our
ears in hockey playoffs, the
baseball season began last
