marked by the manufac-
turer. Are you sure that it
is not signed? It could be

seeds for fresh eating.
This has become a whole
new offshoot of the 'health
food industry Out by no
means is restricted to those
who are vegetarians, or who
follow some rigid dietary re-
gimen. ..
There are now available
in an amazing number, of
special pans, dishes and,
tubes for the specific pur-
pose of sprouting seeds but I
have found the most simple
and inexpensive to be the
most convenient. These are
a set of three jar -top screens
that fit any wide-mouth
canning jars.

Just what is it7
A: Staffordshire is a
county in midland Eng-
land. In several towns
there were makers of inex`
pensive and popular earth-
enware china. Much of it
was marked; some of it
was not. Since the products
of all the potters were sim-
ilar, this china became bet-
ter known as "Staf-
fordshire" than by the
names of the potters.

Nutritional information is
given for each. type of sprout
so you know exactly which
vitamins and minerals
you're' getting. Sprouts are
all very high in nutrition
which is easy to understand
when you consider they are
living, growing food when
you eat them. They're vastly
superior to just eating the
seeds because vitamin con-
tent increases at a tremen-
dous rate with sprouting.
The ,sprouting table will
also give serving ideas and
tips on how best to use each
type of sprout. Most seeds
are simply covered with
water in the jar and soaked
overnight. The water is
dumped out through the
screen top and the jar left on
its side on the kitchen coun-
ter or whatever, where you
can watch the seeds sprout
and grow. They are rinsed a
couple of times a day, again
through the screen top.-,-• no
need to remove it.
The water the seeds have
soaked in is rich in nutrients
and can be put into soups,
stews or bread dough.
Black-eyed peas sprouted
taste like fresh peas and are
especially good raw in sal-
ads. Wheat sprouts are sur-
prisngly sweet and very
easy to do. They're especial-
ly good added to bread
dough or sweet -bread batter.

Other seeds that can be
sprouted include Soybeans,
radish, lentils, corn and gar-
banzos. Most are very good
as a salad ingredient or
topping, in bread dough, as a
topping for soups and cas-
seroles or atop baked pota-
toes, or as an omelet filling
with tomato and or cheese.
Many folks sprout mung
beans for the famous bean
sprouts that are so good in
Chinese vegetables and sal-
ads but they need a dark
place and are rather fin-
nicky about their tempera-
ture which, if not just right,
sends them in a snit and they
turn brown. They can be
rather bitter.
In our family, the favorite
is alfalfa. We usually have
two jars on the go on the
kitchen counter, each at dif-
ferent stages of develop-
ment. Alfafa sprouts are
quick and easy, are never
bitter and dress up the sim-
plest sandwich along with
mayonnaise in the most
marvelous manner.
For apartment -dwelling
children, seed sprouting can
betheir first direct experi-
ence in growing things and
for senior citizens living
alone, it can provide an inex-
pensve and healthful dietary
supplement.

Just as 1 'walked past 'thee

years old, I heard one sa)':
"If you gotta die; why go to
college?'" So help me, that's
what he said. I don't know
whether they were talking
about reincarnation or the
increase in university fees,
but it shook me rigid.
Why go to college, indeed?
Especially if ya gotta die. I
went to college. And went
and went and went. I started
right after high school, and
what with one thing and
another, I -was a married
man with a child by the time
I got a degree, nine years
later. Nobody can tell me
you have to go to college to
get into that predicament.
The first year I was there,
I learned three things. One
was how to shoot a pretty
fair game of pea pool. The
second was how to say "I
love you" in Portuguese so I
could converse with a babe I
met from Brazil. (1 think it
goes "Eu to amo") . The
third was that I wasn't going
to pass my exams, so, with a
sudden burst of patriotism, I
joined the Air Force just be-
fore exam time.
Returning after the war, I
was a lot older, sadder and
wiser. 1 was determined to
get down to business, and
make every minute count. It
was during this period' of in-
tense study that I learned
some things that have stood
me in good stead during the

I would strongly recommend
it to any young person. You'll
be amazed -at how quickly
the learning seeps, into you.
The very first time you're on
holidays, you'll see how far
you've outdistanced the folks
at home on the farm: Why,
your Dad probably won't
even know the names of the
French romantic poets..And
your mother,, who has been
trying to give you the im-
pression that sheknows
more than you, won't even be
able to discuss intelligently
the basic -Causes behind the
French revolution.
Your ' home -town girl
friend will swoon with de-
light as you puff your new
pipe with an air and tell her
emphatically that Schopen-
hauer's philosophy puts
women in their proper place
- mere vessels for the per-
petuation of the race.
Trouble is nowadays, go-
ing to college is becoming so
1. expensive that about the only
way you can get there is to
have rich parents, and make
such a hellion of yourself
around town that they'll be
glad to ship you off for four
years.
If your parents aren't rich,
next best thing istolook over
your elderly ;incites and
aunts. Find one who's a little
shaky on the pins or has a
bad heart: Take out a large

with yourself as the benefici-

stories being secondary.
He died in Paris id 1900.
The best biographyof Wilde
is conceded to be that'by his
friend Frank Harris which
came out in 1910 under the
title "Oscar Wilde: His Life.
and Contessidns" . It is now
available in -paper, a very
t volume, as the type is
1 rge and the margins are
ig. In this edition other
matter also will be found.
The Harris biography is
concerned ' chiefly'. with
Wilde' -s - downfall and is
rather a picture of a man
than of a literary career.
