Planning a wddding•
shower? There are plenty of
ways to make this event easy
and fun -- for the bride, the
guests and for you!
One way is to give the
shower a theme. This will
guide guests in a nice way
toward gifts the bride and
groom will really appreci-
ate.
According to Bride's
magazine, it's perfectly
acceptable to mention on the
shower invitation stores
where the bride is regis-
tered.
Bride's also reports many
department store bridal
registries now list the house-
wares department so this
allows an even wider choice
in gift buying.
If the bride is not reg-
istered, she'll thank you for
listing her favorite bath or
decorating colors on the

Delight," or for a bath
theme, "Decorate the
Bath!" Carry the theme
through ... gift bars of soap
could be game prizes at a
bath shower.
And, for wedding gift
ideas, a new line called
Rubbermaid II offers pretty
bath items in gift boxes.
CONSIDER THE
COUPLE'S TASTE
You could also plan the
shower around the decorat-
ing tastes of the bride and
groom. The invitation could
read ... "A Country Shower .
.. Janet and Dave are lovers
of old-fashioned treasures
and homespun natural
goods, so think 'country' for
this shower ! " Cards with a,.

lottery and ,llaekets would
help convey the idea.
Don't forget important de-
tails . enough seating
(arranged for sociable con-
versation), fresh flowers or
other decorations and soft
music in the background.
You may need someone to
help you welcome guests and
introduce people. to each
other, plus help in serving
refreshments and someone
to note gifts and giver as
packages are opened (have
pen and paper on hand).
Prior to,the shower, cover
the basics with those helping
you so minimum direction
will be required while guests
are present.
Games? More than one
person has groaned at the
thought, but they can help
break the ice for guests just
meeting one another.
AMUSING ANECDOTES
Here's a suggestion. Have
two sets of matching num-
bers prepared. Each arriv-
ing guest receives a number
while the duplicate is attach-
ed to their gift.
As the bride opens each
gift she calls out the number
and the guest with that
number must relate some
funny incident, perhaps from
marriage, a first date or a
situation of their choice.
You can tie this idea into a
kitchen or bath shower
theme by having guests
relate their craziest experi-
ences in a kitchen or a bath-
room.
Guests can vote on the
winning story, and to collect
the prize the winner must
sing a stanza from a favorite
"in -the -shower" tune for a
bath shower, or perhaps
make up an "ode to a veget-
able" for a kitchen shower.
(If the winner was voted the
funniest story teller, there,
will probably be little trouble
with this assignment!)
HAVE A GOOD TIME
Above all, plan the shower
to provide a happy event for
your guest of honor, and do
simplify gift buying for your
guests with a little direction:

Those are but a few of the
questions which may puzzle
/ prospective bridegrooms.
Most of the answers to those
questions have pat answers,
many of them having been
handed down from antiquity,
others being relatively
modern in conception.

all, of the questions that the
average groom may pose:

the wedding is to be formal,
semiformal or informal?

If she wears a long gown

Q.: If the wedding is
formal, what do I wear?
A.: In the daytime, a cut-
away coat and striped
trousers. However, in some
contemporary weddings the
groom will wear a white tail-

out for the gray cutaway.
For a contemporary
evening formal ceremony,

while the traditionalist will
wear the classic white tie
and tails.

ding, the groomsmen may
dress "a step down" from
the groom, i.e. if the groom
wears a tailcoat, the grooms-

Groom traditionally presents
attendants with gifts
Long ago, when a young
man fell in love, he didn't
stand on ceremony, he just
stole into the girl's house and
kidnapped her! But he
played it safe by bringing
along a strong-armed friend
to deal with any pursuers.
If his lady love had more
than one brother, he brought
along several stalwart
friends. Hence, the tradition
of a "best ' man" and
"ushers" was born.
Nowadays, the best man
and ushers perform equally
important — if less dramatic
— functions.
Aside from getting the
groom to the church on time
(properly, one quarter hour
in advance of the ceremony),
his attendants perform such
tasks as seating the bride's
and bridegroom's family and
friends, having the clergy-
man's or judge's fee and the
marriage license .ready at
the appropriate time, and
acting as toastmaster at the
bridal table—paying special
attention to the bride's at-
tendants.
As an expression of his
gratitude for their help, the
groom traditionally presents
the best man and'ushers with
commemorative gifts.
