Painted brick
hard to clean
Q. We are in the process
of purchasing a home with
a used -brick fireplace that
has been painted white. We
much prefer the appear-
ance of natural brick, but
have been told that the
only way to remove the
paint would be .,to hire a
professional sandblaster,
costing hundred of dollars.
We have thought of cov-
ering the brick with . mor-
tar and rock, but were told
the mortar would not
adbere.to the paint surface
and would have to be sand-
blasted anyway. We would
be grateful for any helpful
methods to simplify the
procedure and lower the
cost to return the brick to
its natural state or finish it
with a new surface. —

A. Try a solution of triso-
dium phosphate mixed in
water — two pounds of tri -
sodium phosphate in one
gallon of water. Allow to
stand and remove the paint
with a scraper and wire
brush. Wash with clear
water. ,
However, for very old
dried paints, organic sol-
vents similar to the above
may not be effective, in
which case the paint must
be removed by sandblast-
ing or scrubbing with steel
wool.
Several applications of a
paint remover might get
most of the paint off. But
realize that drawing paint
out of masonry, which is
fairly porous, is almost im-
possible, so far as extract-
ing every last bit of paint is
concerned.
Q. I have a black ring
around the water line of
my toilet and have tried
normal household cleaners,
but have not been able to
remove this stain. Do you
have any suggestions? —
J.L.
A. Try removing the
stain with a solution of ox-
alic acid applied with a
dish mop. The stain is
probably a scale caused by
hard water.
Another possible remedy
is to' use a weak solution of
muriatic acid. Rinse well
afterward with plenty of
clear .water.
And be careful when
working with either solu-
tion to avoid spatters on
the hands or face. I suggest
you wear goggles and rub-
ber gloves.
Q. We recently removed
our, carpeting and foam
rubber padding to reveal
beautiful oak flooring. Our
problem is the padding left
sort of printed rings on the
flooring which we are not
able to remove. Do you
have a solution for us? —
Henry C.
A. To restore oak floor-
ing, you will probably need
to completely refinish the
surface, starting with sand-
ing the floor to remove the
rings or stains and printed
marks. The floor surface
then should be treated as
new wood.
I persgnally prefer a
penetrating wax finish for
floors that receive hard
usage. This is a mineral
type of wax that comes in
a variety of wood colors
and penetrates into the
wood.
A more lustrous finish
can be obtained by apply-
ing one or two coats of a
paste floor wax. There will
be less likelihood of
scratches showing.
SNACKS 1N OUR DIET
While improper snacking
may add extra pounds of
body fat, most nutritious
snack foods, such as granola
products, add little or no fat
to our diet. This is especially
important when you consider
that an over abundance of fat
in the diet has been linked
with a variety of diseases —
including cancer.
