Though the Academy Awards audience is usuilry .- generous with • standing ovations, they were ex- ceedingly stingy this year. Talents like Shirley Temple (I feel cheated that I was not around to see her in person; what a fantastic little girl!), Frank Sinatra, Sir Richard Attenborough, Cary Grant and veteran producer Hal Roach surely deserved mdre of a tribute. There were some rewarding moments in the Oscar telecast.. Canada received two Academy Awards, one for a CBC - Television production, Boys and Girls, which was based on a short story by Alice Munro; and one for the documentary short subject, Flamenco at 5:15, a production of the National Film Board of Canada. How nice that we are finally receiving worldwide recognition for our film work in this country. Perhaps the most emotional moment came when Shirley MacLaine was named best actress for her performance in Terms of Endearment, the story of a bittersweet relationship between a mother and daughter. Though some may have felt Debra Winger may have given more in her performance in the same film, MacLaine is long overdue, after four. nominations, for this reward for top film work over thirty years. Her other competitors were Jane Alexander for Testament, Meryl Streep for Silkwood and Julie Walters for 'Educating Rita. Terms of Endearment was also named the best picture of 1983 and won Oscars for its director and writer, James Brooks, and supporting actor Jack Nicholson, one of the few artists to hold both a supporting and leading Oscar, the latter for his role,. in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Robert Duvall, who played a country music performer in Tender Mercies, was named best actor, edging out Michael Caine for Educating Rita, Tom Courtenay and Albert Finney from The Dresser and Tom Conti from Reuben, Reuben. Best supporting actress was Linda Hunt for her work in The Year of Living Dangerously. The Right Stuff, a story about the astronauts' first trip into space, and Ingmar Bergman's film, Fanny and Alexander, each took four Oscars, the first for film editing, sound, sound effects editing and original music score; the latter for cinematography, costume design, art direction and best foreign film. Return oi the Jedi won a special Oscar for visual effects. Conspicuous by her ab- sence was Barbra Streisand, whose great film, Yentl, won only one Oscar, that for original songs by Michel LeGrand and Alan and Marilyn Bergman who paid tribute to Streisand. 1:30 One Day at a Time 57 As the World Turns 6, 7D, 4D 2:00 Take 30 3, 8, 5, 10 Another World 5D, 13 One Life to Live 7; 11 Laverne and Shirley 57 2:30 Coronation Street 5 Wok With Yan 8, 10 • City Life 57 Capitol 7D, 4D Good Company 3 It's Your Move 6 3:00 The Guiding Light 6, 7D, 4D Do It for Yourself 3 20 Minute Workout 10 More Real People 5D The Irish R.M. 5 Three's Company 8 Soapbox 11 Quincy 57 General Hospital 7, 13 3:30 Happy Days 10 Good Times 5D Jeffersons 8 Wok with Yan 3 4:00 Battle of the Planets 6 Do It For Yourself 5 Beverly Hillbillies 3, 8 I Love Lucy 10 Eight is Enough 7D, 4D Jeffersons. 5D 20 Minute Workout 57 Happy Days 7 The Young and the Restless 11 The Love Connection 13 4:30 Gilligan's Island 6 Toronto Rocks 57 All in the Family 5D One Day at a Time 8 WKRP 7 'Laugh In 13 Jeffersons 10, 3 The.
