Mrs. Hummel said at- tendance was up con- siderably from last year and although figures are vague she cites a record attendance of 50,000 a few years ago. Money raised from the festival goes to various charitable organizations. A large part goes to the Association for the Mentally Retarded, as well as other groups in town. Last year $33,000 was raised and Mrs. Hummel hopes the figures are close to that this'year. "Some things were up and some were down this year," she said. An incident which could have been a 'disaster was quickly overcome. Fuel lines that supplies propane to stoves where the pancakes 4' were cooked were slashed by vandals sometime during the previous night. Two- hour countryside bus tours were arranged that took visitors to several at- tractions in the area. The sugar bush tour was a main event which allowed spec- tators to see how the sap was tapped from the trees and eventually boiled down to the syrup that was later served on pancakes. Art and craft shows were available at the Elmira high school. Other attractions included an antique show and sale at Park Manor School and Old MacDonald's Farm, which was a huge success with the children. The farm hasn't been featured at the festival for several years. This time, two horses from the Carlsberg team were featured for an extra attraction. The art of taffy -making was demonstrated by two local men in the park. A coffee house featured local entertainment and the Mercy Brothers put in an hour-long appearance at the festival. The Canadian Broad- casting Corporation (CBC) caught a bit of the festival on film on Saturday which it will used in its mini -drama series Backstretch. One of the main characters ap- peared at a festival booth "selling pies. The Elmira Senior Citizens baked the pies used in the scene and the actress used a corner of the festival committee's retail booth for filming. In return, the CBC gave the festival committee $200. Over 190 vendors sold their wares in the "mall". Money raised through rental fees reached $7,590, up from last year's $6,785. an 413 The festival committee wilt be working until June to . wrap up this year's festival;. and then will take the IP summer off before, stardag in September to plan next year's ,,events, k.'0urteef people make uyE the festival committee. Mrs. Lee's cushion was on display in Don King's Barbershop window before it moved to the Elmira which school where it was on display last Saturday, Mrs. Hummel said the cold winds on Saturday didn't deter spectators from coming out. "As long as it was sunny that was the main thing." Herb Epp officially opened the festivities which began at 9 a.m. Mr. Epp and other officials arrived at the Chamber of Commerce tourist booth and were taken in a horse-drawn wagon to the Gore Park bandstand for the opening ceremonies at 9:30. Guests were served pancakes and then par- ticipated in a special log - sawing contest on Water Street East. The ceremonies included plaque presen- tations to the wife of the founder of the festival and the student who designed the. cover of the festival brochure, an address from Woolwich Mayor Ken Seiling and greetings from Oncle Hans, the K -W Oktoberfest symbol. Approximately 2,500 servings of pancakes were sold, topped with 52 pounds of butter and 50 gallons of syrup.
