GEORGE BROWN r Among the many presents Amy received were money, a wooden doll house, a new bicycle and an Easter outfit. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Glover visited Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Milligan. Mr. and Mrs. Hector Purdon of Strathroy visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Angus Falconer. On Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Alan Falconer and family, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Craig and family, Bill Uuldriks and other neighbors held a very successful garage sale. The weather being fine, all the articles for sale received a good display. Dr. and Mrs. Ed Carey of Kitchener visited on the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Gorrie Pers Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fer- guson have returned home after a three-week tour of Texas, New Orleans and Mexico. Last Monday they visited Mrs. Don Ireland of Teeswater and also with Mr. and Mrs. Larry Pellett, Rae- lynn and Clare, of Tees - water. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Mundell visited Sunday with Rev. and Mrs. W. A. Hen- derson of Lucknow and their daughter, Clara Henderson, who recently returned from Malawi, Central Africa, after two and a half years in the service. Miss Henderson is on furlough until July. Mrs. Morton Squire of Sherwood Park, Alberta, is spending some time with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hayden. A number attended the Belmore Maple Syrup Festival last Saturday. Jill Strong spent the weekend ;with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Strong. it , whose marriage to Bri n -Welsh takes place May 18 at To?onto, was honored at bridal showers at the homes of Mrs. Alex Graham last Saturday afternoon and -Mrs. Bill Strong Sunday af- ternoon. Many friends and ona.l Notes 1 relatives attended. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lee of Londesborough visited last Saturday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ferguson. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Bur- chill, Jilena and Brandi Lee of Harriston, were supper guest's at the same home Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Eric McKenzie and Danielle of Bluevale also visited at the Ferguson home Sunday. Mrs. George Ash of Listowel spent the weekend with Mrs. Thomas Ash. Leisa and Brett Garniss of RR 1, Wroxeter, spent Sunday with their grand- parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Cathers. Dr. and Mrs. David Charters, Kari and Joel of Essex, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Faust. Sunday guests at the same home were Mr. and Mrs. John Charters, Owen Sound, Mr,, and Mrs. Wayne Faust of Kurtzville. New officers are installed at Whitechurch WI meeting Whitechurch — New of- ficers were installed when the annual meeting of the Women's Institute was held in the Community Memorial Hall on April 11 at 12 noon. Hostesses were Mrs. Garnet Farrier, Mrs. Lorne Durnin 0and Mrs,. William Rintoul and the members enjoyed a delicious pot luck luncheon. The meeting opened with president Mrs. Farrier presiding. Secretary Mrs. McGuire read the minutes and thank you notes for cheer boxes received. It was decided to have a silent auction to dispose of material left from the flea auction at Wingham. Russell McGuire is to make a book case for the World Series books belonging to the WI. The fees were collected for the coming year and it was decided to pay the hostess fee. It was also decided that members would -vote to hold only the convention at London in June and not hold the spring conference as the events occur too close together. Committee conveners gave their reports: Family and Consumer Affairs, Mrs. Tom Day; Agriculture and Canadian Industries, Mrs. James Wilson; Citizenship and World Affairs, Mrs. William Rintoul; Education and Cultural Activities, Miss Merle Wilson; Resolutions, Mrs. George Fisher; Public Relations, Mrs. Don Ross; curator, Mrs. Currie; sun- shine and cheer, Mrs. Fred Tiffin. The new officers were then installed: president, Mrs. Fisher; vice president, Mrs. Currie; secretary -treasurer, Mrs. Farrier; assistant secretary Mrs Alan Bill Purdon. Those attending the Thankoffering meeting at t'I rinity Church on Sunday esening were Mrs. Garnet Farrier, Albert Coultes, Mrs. Pauline Adams, Mrs. Dave Gibb and Mrs. Russell Chapman. Communion service was held Sunday at the United' Church with Rev. G. Ball conducting. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Uuldriks visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Boonstra and family, Sarnia. On Saturday at 7 p.m., Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dueharme of Goderich held a dinner at their home for Laidlaw and Martin relatives with 34 in attendance. Relatives at- tended from London, Luck - now, Gbderich, Guelph, For- est, Toronto, ' Whitechurch and Ilderton. Visitors with Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Beecroft were Mr. and Mrs. Archie Hertel and grandchildren of Kitchener and Ken Sinnamon, Wing - ham. Ronald Beecroft, a member of the Wingham Rockers hockey club, is playing ata tournament in Florida most of this week. Visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Walter Elliott and Karen were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Elliott, Jeffery, Leslie and Matthew, Brussels, Mr. and Mrs. David Elliott, Strat- ford, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Laidlaw, Michelle and Jason, London, Mr. and Mrs. Barry Elliott, Ryan and Kyle. Visitors last week with Mr. and Mrs. Carl McClenaghan and Mrs. Mary Mc- Clenaghan were Mr. and Mrs. Mack Stewart, Waterloo, Cliff McMillan of St. Catharines, Michael McClenqghan Kitchener, Mrs. Sandy -Fair and Craig of Bluevale, Mrs. Eileen Parker and grandchildren Bennie and Billie. Sid Foien of Toronto passed away last week in Toronto. Mr. Foien was married an a sister of Frank Ross. This community ex- tends sympathy .to the family. Quite a number from here attended the Maple Syrup Festival held last week at Belmore. The Monday After -Four class met in the Chalmers Church Sunday School room with leaders Mrs. Lamb and Mrs. Moore serving cookies and drinks to the eight in attendance. A special story for Easter, "The Most Wonderful Day", based on Matthew, chapter 28, verse 6, was told. Songs were sung and the children learned a new song, "The King of Glory". They made chicks from plastic bottles and bristol board. There will not be a meeting on April 23. The next meeting will be on April 30. The meeting closed with the singing of ,the national anthem. WIIITECHURCH CLUB Six members attended the meeting at Mrs: Elliott's home. Muriel Taylor -discussed women, sports and suppleness and asked the members how flexible they.. are. She also linked food and fitness; stressing the im- portance of minerals and carbohydrates in one's diet. She demonstrated macaroni, cheese and tomato, as well as an apple crunch sundae. The next meeting will be held April 23 at nine o'clock at Mrs. Purdon's home. Miss Senior Majorette is Hailey Jo Robertson; Miss Intermediate Majorette is Lisa Chapman and Miss Junior Majorette is Jennifer Eadie, while in front are Miss Juvenile Majorette, Andrea McBride, and Miss Tiny Tot Majorette, Heather Anne Hall. All girls are students of Mrs. Patti Robertson. Seniors group enjoys otluck dinner, slides GORRIE — The senior citizens club enjoyed a potluck dinner last Tuesday when the group met at the town hall for the April meeting. After the tables were cleared the president, Harold Robinson, called the meeting to order with the singing of "0 Canada" with Mrs. Wilbur Hogg at the piano. As it is the treasurer's birthday this month, all joined in singing "Happy Birthday" and "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow" to Jean Sparling. The secretary, Mrs. Melville Dennis, read the March minutes and gave the roll call. The secretary reported two car -loads of Gorrie seniors attended the WMS April meeting is held at the church' GORRIE — The Women's Missionary Society of Knox Presbyterian Church held its April meeting at the church last week. Mrs. James Robinson opened the meeting with an Easter poem, followed by the hymn "Fairest Lord Jesus". Mrs. Gordon Moir was in charge of the devotions. She read from the Book of Luke and read an inspirational Easter story for the meditation. Mrs. Alvin Mundell `sang a solo entitled "Alone", ac- companied by Mrs. Glenn Underwood at the organ. The roll call was answered by a scripture containing the word "fellowship" and in- troducing the friend each member had invited to the meeting. Mrs. Mundell read the minutes of the last meeting before Mrs. -Robinson took charge of ;The business period. The' date chosen to visit the. Fordwich nursing home is Aug. 44. • Mrs. James. Patterson and Mrs. Gordon Steinacker were appointed to assist with registration at the annual meeting of the Hamilton and London synodical of the WMS to be held April 24 and 25 in Wingham. Mrs. Mundell presented slides with a recorded narration on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The meeting closed with a prayer by Mrs. Patterson and the singing of grace. The ladies served homemade hot cross buns with cheese and jam. St. Patrick's Day party at the day centre in Wingham. The treasurer's report was given and the June trip discussed. Alvin Mundell reported on theexecutive rally at Harriston. The zone rally is to be held at Arthur May 31 with registration at 9 a.m. Jane Leach of the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture will be the speaker. The next regular meeting is scheduled for May 8. Jack Ferguson reported work has begun at the Listowel Senior Citizens Complex and it is to be named Maitland Terrace. The president turned the meeting over to the com- mittee in charge. Mrs. Sheldon Mann introduced Mr. and Mrs. William Wright who took all present on an imaginary trip to the Yukon by showing scenic pictures of Parry Sound, North Bay, Kenora, Edmonton, Saska- toon, Peace River, Dawson Creek, Skagway, Abbotsford and Kamloops. They also showed slides of New Bruns- wick and Florida. Mrs. Mann thanked the Wrights for their presentation. Mrs. Mann and Mrs. Mundell played a piano duet. The president closed the meeting. The roil cad: ,was answered by a religious event. in a foreign country. Minutes were read by secretary Mrs. Russell Chapman and the offering and Least Coin were received. A thank you note was received from the Moore family. Mrs. Garnet Farrier then read the chapter on "Life for the Poor" from the study book, "Jesus Means Life", speaking about the compassion Jesus had for the poor and outcast. Mrs. Farrier then led a Lenten worship service with each member participating. Hymns were read and sung and Mrs. Sleightholm read scripture from St. Luke's Gospel. Rev. G. Ball led in prayer. Mrs. Durnin thanked all who took part in the meeting and expressed gratitude to the hostess. The travelling basket was passed and Mrs. Gibb served lunch. Shower for Jill Strong, bride-to-be GORRIE — A shower was held April 15 for Jill Strong at.the home of her aunt, Jean Strong of Gorrie. Present were about 20 guests from Toronto, Woodstock, Kit- chener, Burlington, Wing - ham and Gorrie. YOUNG KNIT'TE'R--Coulter's Corner of'73orrie had an impressive display of hand - knitted articles at the craft show and sale at the Howick Public School oi April 14. Above Marlene Coulter, 12, displays a sweater she knit. Marlene was taught to knit by her mother when she was five or six years old and knit her first sweater when she was eight. (Staff Photo) During the afternoon fun games were organized by Gwen Strong and enjoyed by everyone. Jill received many nice gifts delivered by her young cousins, Cara, Leslie and Elizabeth. She kindly thanked everyone. A dessert luncheon was served by her aunts, Jean, Louise, Gwen and Helen. Honored guests were her grandmother, Mrs. John Strong, and her great-aunt, Mrs. Glad Edgar. Jill's marriage to Brian Welsh of Toronto will take place May 18. Agric. society plans program BRUSSELS — Plans for the Brussels, Agricultural Society's May 26 program and dance were finalized at a meeting last Wednesday evening. The Mercy Brothers will be performing, starting at 8 p.m. and dan- cing will commence at 10 p.m. In gther business at last week's meeting, the society decided to move the show barn from the present site to the community centre and to install a new roof the same color as the centre's. The Brussels Pipe Band was paid $75 for attending the fair in 1983. Prize money for the 1984fair was raised in the heavy and light horses, sheep and goats categories. Mrs. Alex Taybr hosts UCW.m€el G•QRRIE Meller; of the Gerrie United Church Women, Unit , 2, met at. the home. of Mrs. Alex Taylor last Wednesday for the April meeting, Mrs. Robert Gibson was in charge of the worship and study, opening with the hymen "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross". The scripture reading was from the Book of Mark. Mrs. Gibson chose as tier theme Easter and its meaning as a rebirth to many forms of a new, triumphant and abundant life. She closed her service with the poem "The Touch of the Master's Hand" and the hymn "There is a r:rr'n Hill Oar Oar. The president, ;Wks. Cecil. Grainger, took charge of the business and reminded members of the upcoming events on the church calendar for the next two months. The roll call was answered and the collection received. The treasurer gave a brief report and the president adjourned the meeting with a brief prayer. Mrs. A. Minogue, Mrs. John Strong and the hostess served refreshments in the social hour that followed. The regular May meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. R. Gibson May 9.
