England's famed Culture Club arrived in the country last week to begin a tour of major cities and let audiences get a glimpse of this phenomenon that has invaded the world of popular music if one can be so bold as to call it music! The leader of this group is George O'Dowd, known as Boy George. Boy George is indeed a Boy Wonder; one can't help but Wonder if he is a Boy! He dresses in weird clothes, styles and adorns his hair in all kinds of fancy things, smears white pan- cake makeup on his face and wears bright scarlet lipstick. Then the dear lad wonders why people imply that he is "different"! Boy George is one of several pop singers who are confused about their sex. Annie Lennox, lead singer of Eurythmics, slapped on a wig and dressed like a man at the Grammy Awards show. For a long time, she had me fooled and by the sounds of the screams from the balcony, seemed like she also fooled some gals there! What a bunch of weirdos this modern age is producing! It seems absurd that people's mouths dropped open when the Beatles mune to Canada in long hair! More than 1000 people waited more than 12 hours at the Montreal airport to see the Culture Club arrive and they played to a packed' house in the city which only proves again that "the whole world is crazy 'cept me and thee"! It was a feather in the cap for Newfoundland as the story of explorer Sir Hum- phrey Gilbert was named best television program at the annual presentation of ACTRA Awards. A pro- duction featuring mainly Newfoundlanders, it de- feated Ready for Slaugh- ter, a For The Record production about a farmer trying to avoid bankruptcy, and Stratosphere, the Harry Rasky special about Can- adian 'opera star, Theresa Stratas. The miniseries, Empire Inc., was responsible for winning ACTRA Nellies for best actor Kenneth Welsh, best actress Linda Griffiths, best supporting actor Gabriel Arcand and best drama writer Douglas Bowie. Best actress ' in a continuing • role on TV was ,Wendy Crewson from Home Fires and best variety performance was by Richard McMillan in the 'Stratford production of The Mikado. Top radio awards went to The Panther and The Jaguar, actor Sean Mulcahy from that production, ac- tress Patricia Phillips from the dramatic version of Margaret Laurence's The Diviners, and performers Dinah Christie and Tom Kneebone for best variety. A tearful Dinah also watched as her father, Robert Christie, accepted -the John Drainie Award for ex- cellence in a career that spans more than 50 years. at clearout' prices at arvey Krotz Ford on Saturday.
