Put skids
under weeds
Most backyard garden-
ers have some patch or
other in the garden that is
a constant ui nce be-
cause of the crabgrass,
chickweed or some other
green Invader that inevi-
tably takes over each year.
Often it's along a fence
line, bordering on undevel-
oped or uncared-for
ground.
In this case it's some-
times wisest to dig down
by the fence and sink
something like aluminum
printing plates = used
ones often are available
from local print shops -
' down into the soil along the
fence or property line to
cut off the invasion. Then
you are just left to clean up
your own ground.
Often, digging up the
weeds just doesn't work.
With crabgrass, for in-
stance, every bit of white
root left in the ground will
sprout sure as death and
• taxes, and start the whole
thing going again. Other
perennial weeds perverse-
ly germinate their seeds at
different times, so you can
never really be rid of the
stuff:
Once I've sunk my metal
plates or laid a double
layer of plastic held down
with a small rock wall, I
find that planting potatoes
in the adjacent area is a
great garden houseclean-
ing method. Provided the
soil is fairly rich, you'll get
a good crop of potatoes.
And the process of digging
trenches, hilling up and
lifting the tubers all
• discourages weeds.
But it's the solid .leafy
canopy made -by properly

rotted sawdust - any or-
ganic materials that tend
to bite into the fine -tex-

heavy soils.
For many heat -loving fa-

though, another solution
would be to grow them, m
containers which can be
set against a sunny south
wall or in some other
sheltered, warm location.
One kind of container
growing which is intriguing
and versatile is the plastic
growing bag. Last spring a
nursery near me had pota-
toes growing in one of
these as a demonstration of
their uses. Whether pur-

By Louisa Rush
An interesting - letter from
a reader this week, who
writes, "I am a little on the
tall side and find that the
ordinary knitting patterns do
not fit me. Can you. recom-
mend -a shop where I can
have someone alter a pattern
for me or can you suggest a
simple way I can do this for
myself? Also, I would like to
know why knitting books do
not have a date on them -
the month and year?
Producing knitting books
is a very costly affair these
clays. First the designer has
an idea, then the original
model is knit, then photog-
raphy-,, then_ ins- r -actions 0--0
have to be written, extended
for 'sizes and checked long
before -thejf' hi•e'tinted.`'Sb'
manufacturers hesitate to
"date" their books, they like
to have them on the market
for at least a year or two.
Unfortunately I cannot
recommend a specific wool
shop, as my column appears
in many newspapers across
the country. However, I
suggest you visit the wool
shop where you are accus-
tomed to buying your pat-
terns and have a chat with
the owner or saleslady.
Usually in the smaller shops
rather than the department
stores, you'll find the person-
nel helpful and knowledge-
able to alter the pattern for
you.
Altering the pattern for
someone who is a little taller
than average is relatively
simple to do. On a skirt,
more rows are knitted be-
tween the decreases, that is
if you are knitting from the
bottom to the top, and be-
tween the increases if you
spaced spuds that really
puts the skids under weeds.
They sprout, then expire
from lack of light. If they
don't downright die, they
are at least severely weak-
ened and certainly won't
be in any shape to produce
offspring!
I've read of gardeners
effecting the ,same crowd-
ing -out routine with other
vigorous growers like corn,
sunflowers and runner
beans. While these become
established, it may be nec-
essary to keep the weeds
hoed, at least until the de-
sired plants are establish-
ed. A runner bean planted
at the base of each sun-
flower and corn plant, ex-
cept the ones at the very
interior of a square plant-
ing, would provide the
thick, leafy canopy needed -
to do in the weeds. It seems
to me that if you can eradi-
cate weeds and reap a lus-
cious harvest at the same
time, you'll be a rather
clever gardener.
And another problem
common in many backyard
gardens is heavy, wet soiL
Often these soils, especial-
ly in coastal areas, are
acid as well and cause
keen gardeners much
dismay and disappoint-
ment.
One solution is to create

them in the fields for toma-

Filled with a sterile or
soilless planting mix, the
bags are laid flat and punc-
tured for the insertion of
plants, and watered before
planting. The plastic then
can be tucked up against
the plant stems for mini-
mum evaporation of mois-
ture.
Items best suited for bag
culture are tomatoes, orna-
mental gourds, peppers,
summer squash and
eggplant. The soil mix can
be used over if it is provid-
ed with some balanced nu-
trient weekly.

calligraphy
Despite the advent of
typewriters,. word proces-
sors and data terminals,
calligraphy has survived
the centuries.
There is still no way to
duplicate the beauty of
handwritten invitations,
certificates, place cards,
greeting cards, canister la-
bels, posters, documents
and special correspond-
ence.
According to the diction-
ary, calligraphy means
beautiful handwriting. In
practice, it is an art form
that conveys a message.
Calligraphy is distin-
guished by thick and thin
strokes, curves, flourishes,
plumes and genuinely ele-
gant letters. With a flat-
nibbed pen and a steady
hand, nearly everyone can
learn the art.
In the Far East, calligra
phy is as highly revered as
painting or sculpture. In
the Western world, callig-
raphy was at first reserved
for writing the Scriptures.
By the 15th century, Eu-
ropeans had already begun
using calligraphy for their
personal correspondence.
According to "Teach Your-
self Calligraphy," by Ellen
Korn, (William Morrow &
Co. Publishers), Leonardo
da Vinci wrote his personal
letters and papers in a cal-
ligraphic hand.
Korn's book 'shows how
anyone can learn calligra-
phy through simple exer-
cises. Her projects include
labels, address books, book
plates, place mats, book-
marks, stationery, gift
tags, greeting cards and
the invitations below..
Here are directions for
