And they- learn that "go" is a verb which can be substituted for the whole wonderful range of verbs which describe vocalizing. You are what you read. This is one of my principal arguments against porno- graphy. It's always badly written. Garbage in, gar- bage out. I tell my kids. Fortunately vigilant par- ents and educators have de- mocratized and • cleaned up children's literature so that it now presents a wide rang- ing fair and ,just picture of today's worl, free of vio- lence, of role stereotyping and nastiness. Aside from their chronic misapplication of the word "go", today's young readers should grow up to be straight, compassionate citi- zens with a good system of values. It's a good.thing somebody cleaned up children's litera- ture. Right pow .I'm looking at a dog-eared book that was published in 1898 and pro- jects enough garbage to send modern kiddy -lit experts into terminal indignation. • The book's cover sets the tone. There's this little boy, with a pencil behind his ear, working at a real workbench with real tools and real paint and everything. He is mak- ing d doll's house. Beside him, a little lower than his heart, is a little girl, all curls and ruffles: She is gazing up at him adoringly. Let me tell you about the story in the book called What is he Good For Now? We're talking about a dead horse here, and the line drawing on the facing page shows poor old dobbin, as dead as a mackerel, slung across a two -wheeled cart which is being pulled by a luckier horse which has so far escaped the Grim Reaper. The accompanying story begins with cold-blooded matter of factness, as fol- lows: "Well, the old horse is dead. He will be drawn away to a place where the business of putting dead horses to use is carried on. His glossy skin• will be taken off (I can hear childish voices piping, `How Mummy? How?') and cured and made into leather. His hoofs will- furnish glue to - many a glue -pot. His bones will be used for charcoal; the organ builders -will find a place for his tough sinews in their fine instruments; the upholsterer will stuff our mattresses and pillows with the hair from his flowing mane and long tail and some of it will be used for snares to catch birds or for fishing line or for the bows of violins, and many other purposes." And that, I suspect, is about all an average six year old would want to know about a dead horse. A few pages later, there is a drawing of a Victorian bag lady. She's sitting in the snow. Her hand is raised in friendly if dazed greeting. Who is she? According to the caption, she's Crazy Betsy. "Poor old lady," says the story. "Her mind is ill and she cannot think right. So she says the snow is a great comfortable stuffed chair. These men will help her to rise and try to get home to her friends" (The same ones that call her Crazy Betsy? I'll bet she runs away again. We'll skip past the story of the duck who talked too much, and all the little moral fillers like "Vessels large may venture more, but little boats should keep near shore." . We'll pause at the gripping saga of the-aabbit--famil3 — "The wild rabbit digs a hole . .. and lines the nest with fur which she has torn from her own body so thatthe; nest may be nice and warm for her dear little ones. When they come into the world, their mama has to be very careful to keep Item away from their cruel papa who would eat them rip if he could find them. What a wretch he must be!" How about that, Bugs Bunny fans? It certainly gives new meaning to that old expression, "Hare today and gone tomorrow." The writer of this sombre tome for tots has leavened it with a number of sidesplit- ting riddles. When is mam- ma's dress like an old chair? When it is sat -in. Care to tell me why thought is like the sea? Because it is a notion: You'd expect any child who was brought up on such garbage — bad puns aside — would grow' into uncaring and brutal adulthood. , And yet the generation that learned to read with that stuff went bravely off to fight a war to end all wars; sur- vived a depression with no unemployment insurance; lived through another war to see their life's savings erod- ed by inflation and the high taxes needed W provide-UIC benefits to -a generation they had nothing in common with. An awful lot of them are still carrying on and they are amongst the kindest people I know. That's the human spirit for you. Eternally capable of rising above garbage. rTACTORY OUTLET. 9 Herbert St., Waterloo 884-8600 tuos.-Sat. 10.4:30 • Thurs. 4 Fri. to 6 p.m. CRIT (Closed Mon. 6 Sun.)
