By Vonnie Lee
Good movies of bygone
years like Mon Oncle
Antoine, Goin' Down The
Road and The Appren-
ticeship ,of Duddy Kravitz
laid the groundwork for what
is becoming a top-drawer
film industry in Canada.
From a loser that lured no
one to make investments, to
a winner that has Canadians
bragging, the film industry
has moved ahead by leaps
and hounds and Canadians
are richer for it.
Last week people in
Canadian film.honored their
own when the Genie Awards
were presented in a star-
studded event attended by
Prime Minister Trudeau
who, though he may have
lacked, other qualities,
always was a supporter of
the arts.He presented the
award for best film which
went to the production The
Terry Fox Story, based on
the story of the cancer -
stricken young B.C. man
who ran halfway across
Canada to make money for
'cancer research but died
before he could complete the
run. The picture also won
Genies for sound, film
editing and for the two main
actors in the picture, Eric
Fryer who made his acting
debut in the film, portraying
the runner, and Michael
Zelniker, named best sup-
porting actor.
Robin Phillips, who
directed his first full-length
film, and brilliantly, was not
nominated in his category
but his picture won Genies
for sound editing and for
actress Jackie Burroughs.
Maria Chapdelaine,. a
French Canadian film, won
awards for art direction,
costume design, music score
and cinematography. A
Christmas Story was cited
for best screenplay.

Many Western Ontario
residents lost a friend from
their childhood when CKCO
Kitchener's Big Al passed
away Tuesday, March 27,
following a heart attack.
Elwood Jones was 73 and had
been in the radio -television
business for more than 40
years. But it was in the 1950s,
in the early " days of
television, that he endeared
himself to children, first as a
host for Cartoon Capers,
then as a promoter of
children's talents on Tiny
Talent Time. He retired
seven years ago. • „
