From a loser that lured no one to make investments, to a winner that has Canadians bragging, the film industry has moved ahead by leaps and hounds and Canadians are richer for it. Last week people in Canadian film.honored their own when the Genie Awards were presented in a star- studded event attended by Prime Minister Trudeau who, though he may have lacked, other qualities, always was a supporter of the arts.He presented the award for best film which went to the production The Terry Fox Story, based on the story of the cancer - stricken young B.C. man who ran halfway across Canada to make money for 'cancer research but died before he could complete the run. The picture also won Genies for sound, film editing and for the two main actors in the picture, Eric Fryer who made his acting debut in the film, portraying the runner, and Michael Zelniker, named best sup- porting actor. Robin Phillips, who directed his first full-length film, and brilliantly, was not nominated in his category but his picture won Genies for sound editing and for actress Jackie Burroughs. Maria Chapdelaine,. a French Canadian film, won awards for art direction, costume design, music score and cinematography. A Christmas Story was cited for best screenplay. 0-0-0-0-0 Many Western Ontario residents lost a friend from their childhood when CKCO Kitchener's Big Al passed away Tuesday, March 27, following a heart attack. Elwood Jones was 73 and had been in the radio -television business for more than 40 years. But it was in the 1950s, in the early " days of television, that he endeared himself to children, first as a host for Cartoon Capers, then as a promoter of children's talents on Tiny Talent Time.
