My2 FLEA MARKET Saturday, April 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Wingham Armouries. Sponsored by the Wingham & Day Centre for the Homebound. If you've been to the Geor- gian Bay area in winter , time, you may have_ seen — • `"scoots" . • They're speedy, be noisy little craft that look like a punt. and -have- small --airplane eng'mesvn°tile"back. They're the forerunners of the snowmobile. But, unlike snowmobiles, are amphib- ious.' And they've been around the Bay for over half a century. In mid-January, I was tak- ing a coffee break at a truck stop on the highway south of Parry Sound, when Jim McKinnon, a woodsman bud'. dy of mine, pulled in: He was on his way to pick up a scpot that B. B. Robitaille had made for him. ' B. B. Robitaille (nobody seems to know his . first name) is one of those few, hardy camp keepers who. live.year-round in . the .rug - g y autifu1 20,000 Islands area of Southern Georgian Bay, ,The "keepers": take care of the exclusive clubs and big summer homes dur- • ing the winter. I mentioned to Jim that al- though I'd been on just about every other kind of boat and sled, I'd never had a ride on -a scoot. • An hour later, we were at a , dock on Twelve Mile Lake where Jim's partner, Bob Garratt, was waiting: with a scoot to take us over to the Tadanac Club where B. B. looks after things. Bob has his scoot going: It was a modern version with a hull of fibreglass. But the regular rebuilt small air- plane engine. We took off over the ice, shouting to one another above the roar of the engine. I saw a patch of open water in the distance. As we ap- proached . it, Bob slowed down. We hit the water and the scoot made the switch easily. Thirty seconds later we were up again, skimming over' the ice. When we arrived at the Tadanac Club, Joe Reynolds was there. He's the keeper at Iron City, a nearby club that sportsmen from Pittsburg frequent in the summer. He'd come over to visit B. B. Robitaille. Predictably, he came in his scoot. I discovered that camp keepers . swear by their scoots. They're the only ma- chines they trust in that part of Georgian Bay. And I can see why. Even in the dead of winter there are open patch- es of water due to the cur- rents caused by the howling northwest winds. I suggested that the origin- al notion for the scoot might have come from the type of craft used in the Florida Everglades. On the contrary. Apparent- ly, the Florida people got the idea from the camp keepers of Georgian Bay many years ago. THE TV MAN Sales and Service 887-9472 Prop.
