The first period featured close -checking playoff hockey, with good goaltend- ing at both ends, as the teams played 20 minutes with nary a goal. The second period saw the Royals start, to come on strong. In just 58 seconds the goose egg was broken as Jim McGee came from behind the net and, with ..a spin- around motion, zoomed the puck into the corner of the net. The Royals added another goal at 8:45 as Dennis Knox flipped the puck toward the net and, with a swooping strike, Sandy Fitzgerald propelled it 'into the net. Ripley came close in the dying seconds of the period, but Hugh Nichol with a quick glove snared one chance and ' a sprawling save kept Ripley off the scoresheet as the teams headed into the dressing rooms after two periods with the Royals on top 2-0. In the third, the Royals added to their total with goals by Dave Burns, Rick Jacklin and a fine, unassisted, breakaway goal by Randy Clarke. -t 1:45 -1=iplriaged to flip one in from close range and added another from the stick. of Paul Wilken. At the final whistle, the Royals had a 5-2 win as payment for their hard work and were back on even footing with the series tied at two games apiece. WHISTLE STOPS — The Royals had full power suited up for this one and had little Brownie corner By Carolyn Elston At Brownies we started with games and then went into our Sixes. Groups B and C finished their Dancer's Badge. We did the Shoemaker and the Muffin Man. We made up a dance. We danced to Michael Jackson and we did folk dances. Group A worked on Thinking Day. Tharen Keil told them what she knew about Thinking Day and the Brownies learned about the four World Centres. The Brownies made Thinking Day cards. These Brownies earned badges: Tammy Adams and Amy Currie, Baker's; Kendra Merkley and Amy Currie, Singer's; Lori Angus, Friend to Birds; Carolyn Elston, Native Lore; Kara Neil and Danielle Heibein, Pup- peteer's; Tharen Keil, World Friendship; Ciara McKenna, Thrift; Danielle Heibein, Nei;ghbour's; -Margaret Skinn, Baton; Ansley Simp- son, Pet Keeper, and Erin Whiteley, Baker's and Cook's. We want to thank the Optimists for paying for the pool and bus for the Brownie swim party and Mr. and Mrs. W. Keil for taking Group A on a nature hike. Most of Group A earned their Explorer's badges. Both goalies looked good, with Royals' Hugh Nichol coming up big time and time again with a darting hand or sprawling save. Despite giving up five goals, Kevin Harrison played a strong game in a hot spot: the Ripley net. The Howick boys lost to Mount Forest 1-0. Their goalie Christian Feldskov, played an excellent game. The boys will be playing at the Mildmay tournament this weekend. "In- termediate division grand championship. In this meeting on home ice, the Royals lost 5-4 in overtime, allowing Ripley to take a 2-1 lead in the best -of -seven series. The Royals opened the scoring at the two -minute mark as Jim McGee did the heavy digging in the corner and Bob Alton buried the biscuit in the bulging binder - twine. Ripley roared back with goals by Dave Gamble and Brian Regier to take a 2- 1 lead. At 16:39 Jay MacLaurin's lead pass sent Dave Stephenson in alone and he made no mistake in putting the biscuit in the basket so that the teams stood tied at two after one period. Both teams scored in the , second, Brian Regier send- ing Ripley ahead at 12:08 and Stephenson putting the Roy- als back on even ground at 15:51. The see -saw action con- tinued in the third, with the Royals surging into the lead when Stephenson tipped one in and Ripley evening the count as Mark Stanley ,picked the corner. At the final buzzer it was tied at four and the game went into sudden -death overtime. In overtime both teams seemed to shift into high gear and it was exciting, entertaining hockey. The Royals certainly had the best of the play, with more than one close miss, and Stephenson was robbed, not once but twice as he had the Ripley goalie at his mercy. At 16:07 it happened. -' During a wild scramble in front of the Wingham net, Paul _WW ins slid the Puck over the line to give Ripley'a 54 victory. • WHISTLE STOPS — It was exciting playoff hockey between two closely- matched teams as the score see -sawed from side to side with never more than one . goal separating the teams during 76 minutes of play. There was a :good crowd on hand, the bulk of the patrons backing the visiting Ripley squad. Dave Stephenson led the Royal attack with the hat trick, but I am sure he is still a little disappointed at those near' misses in overtime. For Ripley, Paul Wilkins with the winning goal was the hero of the hour. In this win Ripley's Carl Stanley seemed to skate in overdrive all night, picking up a pair of assists and posing a threat every time he zoomed into the Royal end. It was a good,,clean game, with a mere five penalties, all of the minor variety, and neither team connecting oil the power play. With this the second over- time game in the first three games of the series, it looks like a toss-up, promising lots of exciting, fan -pleasing action as the two teams vie for the grand championship. _L.QM INA OALI,E _Attatthe Elmslie_.disappear-t?dln.__ a mob of Wingham players after recording a 7-0 shutoat Royals' hitting ' attack Hallenbeck 147 133• Ryan D over Hawick in a game last week Elmslie 'didn't face Ripley seemed to lack its Deyell 140; Jason Steffler u licate - many Ogg R, the -.game..
