The numbers of people with
weight problems and the
possible medical com-
plications which can occur
as a result of obesity
prompted her to start at the
bottom and teach nutrition to
the people at an early age.
"It seemed more sensible
to approach it from a child's
view," she said, and her idea
"f'p'pears to have been well
'received. Over 30 public and
separate school students
enrolled for the eight-week
course.
Keeping the attention of
that many 12 to 14 year-olds
experience for the children.
She and physiotherapist
Brenda Edgar, also from the
Wingham hospital, have put
together the sessions' to
include quizzes, films, take-
home activities and exer-
cises. .
It isnot a "lose weight"
program, said Mrs.
Blagrave, but rather a fun
wayto learn about- what's
right to eat. Hopefully, she
added, some of what the
children are learning will
spill over to the parents and
other family members.

Easter Seal telethon
grosses $48,000
The first locally -run
telethon for Easter Seals was
held over the weekend at
CKNX and grossed over
$48,000 for disabled children.
Al Skelton, a CKNX
spokesman, said the station
is very pleased with the
outcome of the telethon. The
exact amount raised will not
be known until the pledges
all have been collected and
the various service clubs
involved have deducted
expenses.
Neither CKNX, Easter
Seals nor the local Lions
Club, the service group in
charge of the telethon, had
projected any total or goal,
simply because they had no
idea what to expect, said Mr.
Skelton.
Ontario was the only
province in Canada which
ran the weekend telethon,
but over $1,000,000 was
raised province wide. A
simultaneous telethon was
conducted in the United
States over the weekend.
Mr. Skelton said there
were 18 "phone banks"
located across the area,
manned by volunteers taking
pledges. Locally the
Wingham Sears order office
was converted into a phone
bank for the telethon.
The telethon commenced
last Saturday evening at 7
p.m., broke off for the
hockey game and then
continued straight through
until Sunday at 5 p.m.
Sunday's beautiful spring
weather may have hurt the
pledges, Mr. Skelton said,
but they have no way of
measuring the effect since it
is the first time an Easter
Seal telethon has been held
at CKNX.
In addition to the crew of
CKNX staffers and volun-
teers, Mi. Skelton reported
20 families with handicapped
children from throughout the
area were on -air guests.
As far as another telethon
is concerned, Mr. Skelton
said the station cannot
commit itself, too far in
advance. But considering the
success of this year's
telethon', it is a distinct
possibility.
