After pre -nomination Hype
that had everyone fighting
for top honors, the list of
Oscar nominations was not a
surprise because of what it
'contained, but rather
because of what it did not
contain. Nowhere. in the lists
was the name of Barhr
Streisand who has deved
ten years of her life, indeed
her very soul, into the
making of a single movie,
Yentl. She co -wrote,
produced, directed and
starred in the movie about a
young Jewish girl who must
disguise herself as a man
because girls were not
allowed in Jewish religious
schools at the turn of the
century. It was a slap in the
face for Streisand and her
work.
The pictures that did
seemingly make an im-
pression on those in the in-
dustry are Terms of En-
dearment, The Big Chill, The
Dresser, Tender Mercies
and The Right Stuff. They
were nominated for best
picture award.
Nominated for best actress
were Shirley Maclaine and
Debra Winger from Terms,
Meryl Streep who has won
two previous Oscars. for her
work in Silkwood, the story
of the late Karen Silkwdod
and her struggle to "clean up
the act" at the nuclear plant
where she worked, Jane
Alexander for Testament
and Julie Walters for her top
performance in Educating
. Rita. Also missing from this
list is Canadian native Kate
Nelligan who gave a fan-
tastic performance as the
mother of a missing (•hild in
"Without a Trace". But Kate
