Dresden takes commanding lead
with a 7-3 victory at Wingham

HARASSED BY A DEFENDER, Rick Schiestel fanned on this shot as he skated in
with Steve Nicholson on a two -on -one break. However Schiestel played a strong
game for the Ironmen, scoring twice as the lronmen lost 7-3 to Dresden last Friday
night.

The Dresden Junior Kings
took a commanding 3-0 lead
in the best -of -seven all-
_
Ontario quarter -final play-
offs with a convincing 7-3 win
over the Wingham Ironmen
last Friday night at
Wingham.
The Junior Kings scored
all the goals they needed in
the first period, jumping to a
6-0 lead and then taking a 7-0
lead early in the final frame
before the Ironmen struck
back with three third -period
scores.
Dresden built up its lead
using a strong forechecking
plan which bottled up the
Ironmen deep within their
own territory. They passed
the puck quickly and neatly
and, while on the offensive,
CLEARING THE CREASE—Jim DennisTiplaying-ia-one of the ifefensive slots for the
lronmen, cleared Mike Zruna of Dresden out of the crease the hard way, lifting the
-net off its pegs, as goaltender Rob Schistad prepared to depart for safer surroun-
dings. The Wingham net was not a pleasant spot to be during the first period of Friday
.hight's game, as Dresden fired six goals en route to a 7-3 victory.
Midget B team 'eliminated
from playoffs by Parkhill
The Wingham Midget B
team was eliminated from
OMHA playoff action last
week by Parkhill, three
games to one.
Last Wednesday evening
the local bays traveled to
Parkhill, keen and ready to
win after a taste of victory
last Sunday night in
Wingham. However luck was
not with them and despite
playing well, they couldn't
buy a goal. It appeared that
the goal posts grew every
time they shot. At the end of
the second period, the local
squad was trailing 7-0.
• In the third period,
Wingham's Jamie Robinson
finally put -one home, assist-
ed by Doug Montgomery.
Unfortunately Parkhill retal-
iated with two more goals to
end the game at 9-1 and dash
Wingham's hopes for a fifth
game.
Goalies Todd Stainton and
Murray Skinn played out-
standing hockey and foiled
many scoring opportunities
as did the Parkhill goalie.
The third game of the
series was played in
Wingham last Tuesday night
and it saw the Wingham boys
play a superb game,
resulting in a 7-4 victory.
After the first period, the
score remained at zero, but
in the second period
Wingham Outscored Parkhill
4-2.
During the third. period
Wingham picked up three
more goals to Parkhill's two.
Robinson had a hot stick,
scoring four goals and
assisting on one other.
Robert Gordon scored one
and had two assists. Greg
Moore, back after being out
for several weeks with a
broken hand, picked up a
goal and an assist. Stephen
Skinn added the other.goal.
Dwayne Jenkins had five
assists and Denis Adams,
one.
In the second game of the
series Wingham started out
strong, but was trailing 6-4 at
the end of the second.
However in the third,
Wingham eased up. and
Parkhill scored four
unanswered goals and the
game ended at 10-4 in favor
of Parkhill. The game was
marred by too many
penalties with 30 minutes

used their point men with

help of screens set up in front
of the goal, the netminders
were helpless on a number -of
shots.
Rob Copeland opened the
floodgates, flipping a re-
bound over a sprawling Mike
Campbell after the goaltend-
er had made the initial save.
Bruce McFadden intercept-
ed a bad pass by an Ironmen
defenceman, who dumped
the puck through the slot
from behind his own goal,
and simply blasted the puck
past Campbell's glove hand,
giving the goalie little time
to react.
Dwaine Ellis made it 3-0,
drilling a shot from the point
through a screen in front of
the net, with Campbell hav-
ing no chance. McFadden
then scored his second goal
" of the game, tipping the puck
past .Campbell after Phil
Johnson moved in unscathed
on left wing and slipped a
pass across.
At this point Campbell was
replaced by Rob Schistad,
although he was not to blame
for the 4-0 deficit. Copeland
welcomed Schistad by
scoring his second goal of the
game three minutes later,
shooting from the goalmouth
and giving the goalie no
chance on the play.
Late in the period Rob
McFadden fired a quick shot
through Schistad's pads to
give Dresden a commanding
6-0 lead.
The second period was
scoreless, but the Junior
Kings continued to dominate
the play. After the first
period, in which they held a
19-6 edge in shots on goal,
they increased the margin to
32-11 in the second.
Rob McFadden scored the
first goal of the final frame,
deflecting a shot past
Schistad. The Ironmen
rallied for three goals in the
latter stages of the game,
with Brett Cameron drilling
a low shot past Richie
Copeland from just inside
the blueline.
Rick Schiestel scored
twice, the first goal coming
on a setup by Craig Anderson
and the second goal on a
great effort by Jeff
Bloemberg, who stick -
handled past a defender and
slipped a perfect pass to
Schiestel who ' deposited it
behind Copeland.
Bob Alton was the winner
of $86 in the 50-50 draw.

happy with winning the
WOAA championship.

The Wingham Ironmen
dropped a 4-1 decision to the
Dresden Junior Kings
Sunday night at Dresden,
and in doing so dropped out
of the playoff picture for this
year.
However their season
marked a dramatic turn-
around from last year when
they missed the playoffs
entirely. This year they won
their division and went on to
win the grow championship _
before exiting from the all -
Ontario playoff hunt.
Dresden proved to be the
better club overall, execut-
ing passes, skating and de-
fending at a level slightly
above what the Ironmen
could muster.
Although Wingham was
outscored, the goaltending
appeared to be in their favor.
Both Mike Campbell and
Rob Schistad performed
well, but the Dresden offence
overpowered a somewhat
weakened Ironmen defen-
sive squad (defencemen and
forwards included).

challenge on two of the three
goals, but the second effort
paid off for Dresden.

The Junior Kings scored
the first goal of the second
period to take a 4-0 lead as

Rick Scrimgeour slapped
the rebound of a Ken Fitz-
gerald point shot past the
Dresden netminder to make
it 4-1, but that was as close as
the Ironmen would come as
Dresden clamped down
defensively for the
remainder of the match.
Bantam Rs trailing
in Goderich series
The Wingham Bantam B
team is trailing two games to
one in its best -three -out -of -
five series with Goderich.
The first game was played
in Goderich. Due to a long
absence from the ice for
Wingham, Goderich was
victorious and posted a 4-2
win.
Wingham was back in fine
form for its second game last
Thursday. Bill Kinahan
opened the scoring for
Wingham in the first period
and at the end of the period
the score was tied at 2-2.
Rick Leachman added his
second marker of the game
in the second period.
A fast and exciting third
period opened ' with Steve
Templeman, Doug Cerson
and Kinahan all scoring for
the hometown squad. The
game ended in a 6-2 win for
Wingham. Billy McGrath
was the winning goaltender.
It was back to Goderich
Sunday for another exciting
match. Leachman and
Cerson set up the first
Wingham goal with 17
seconds elapsed in the first
period. The second period
saw both teams scoring two
goals each. Wingham's
Jamie Pickering was taken
to hospital after being hit
across the wrist with a stick.
Luckily his wrist was just
badly bruised and the
Wingham fans hope
Pickering will be back for
this Thursday's game.
Leachman scored once
more for his hat trick. The
score read 4-2 for Wingham
in the third period, but
Goderich was determined to
have a wi and scored three
more goals before the period
was, over to leave the count
at 5-4 for Goderich.
The Wingham Bantam Bs
will play the fourth game of
the series Thursday at 6:30

out.
