CORNER STORE—Larry and Bonnie Bakalar, formerly
residents of Bramalea have been operating the Corner
Variety, in Gorrie, since last September. Both say they
enjoy living in the area and like the idea of operating a
country store. Mr. Bakalar is a member of the
Optimists Club and president of the
Businessmen's Association. (Banner Photo)
Gorrie store fills gaps
in local shopping needs
GORRIE — Life has been
a whole new ball game for
Larry and Bonnie Bakalar,
since moving to Gorrie from
Bramalea and opening the
Corner Variety store and
they both agree that country
life is a change for the better.
The opening of the Corner
Variety, in September 1983,
has also been an im-
provement to the lot of
Gorrie area residents as the
village had been without a

tember of 1982, when both of
the village's stores closed
within a month.
It was a chance oc-
currence that led the"
Bakalars to Gbrrie. Mr.
Bakalar was manager of a
store in the Safeway chain
and Mrs. Bakalar worked in
the shipping department at
Sears, when the couple lived
in Bramalea.
While in. the hospital, re-
covering from an operation
on his leg, Mr. Bakalar
spotted a classified ad in a
newspaper, "Help! We need
a store." said the ad-
vertisment.
"I had been thinking about
opening my own business, so
we drove up to look around
and we liked the area," he
said.
This occurred in June 1982,
and by September the
Corner Variety was open for
business.
Renovations were the first
order of business, as Mr.
Bakalar describes the
building as "a mess" when
they moved in.
The Bakalars • were aided
by relatives as they fixed up
the store, giving it a bright
orderly look without losing
fts country atmosphere.
The next task was stocking
the store and rounding up
suppliers. This was made
more difficult by the fact the
Bakalars were not sure what
the needs of their new
customers would be.
"Before I moved up here
I'd never heard of a 40
kilogram bag of brown
sugar," said Mr. Bakalar.
He said that while many
consider his business a
convenience store, more and
more area residents are
doing their complete weekly
shopping at the Corner
Variety.
The Bakalars are also
enjoying the social life and
getting involved in com-
munity• organizations since
moving to the area and feel

they are not missing a thing
by living in a smaller centre.
Mrs. Bakalar feels there is
more oppurtunity for her
children to do things here,
than there was in Bramalea.
Both the couple's children,
Candy, 12 and Daryl, 11, play
hockey with local teams.
"I think it's good that more
girls can play hockey here,"
said Mrs. Bakalar.
There also seems to be
more ice time available for

Listowel pharmacist
peaks to Institute
FORDW ICH — John
Brown, a Listowel phar-
macist, was guest speaker
When members of the
Women's Institute met in
Fordwich. Mr. Brown told of
coming from Manitoba to
reside at Sault Ste. Marie
with his wife, also a phar-
macist. Each had to take a
repeat internship course as.
Ontario's standards were
different from those of
Manitoba. Mr. and Mrs.
Brown purchased their
present drug store from Mr.
Carter.
Mr. Brown told of over-the-
counter drugs which must be
requested, like Tylenol, Neo
Citron and 222s with codeine.
He spoke of prescription
drugs, saying each file must
have a patient's name,
address, phone number and
doctor. Each prescription is
numbered and each drug
store uses its own numbers.
It is easier to fill the
prescription if the number is
given when ordered.
Narcotics and controlled
drugs can be filled by
prescription but no repeats
are issued as inspectors
check the records to ensure
there are not too many
prescribed. Drugs vary in
their potency and may
create side effects for some
people.
Mr. Brown stated that
television advertising for
drugs increases prices and
urged his hs E : rs to beware
of high pri and ask a
pharmacist for similar
medication at less money.
An interesting question -and -
answer period followed and
Mr. Brown was thanked.
Mrs. A. Demerling
composed a story using
names of 100 talk shows,
stories, ads, etc., which was
read by Mrs. C. Harris and
was very humorous. Mrs. E.
Harding conducted a moving
memorial service for a long-
standing active member,
Mrs. J.. Freeman, who re-
cently passed away. Besides
flowers sent, money dona-
tions that evening went to the
Erland Lee Home.

community work back in,
Bramalea and wasted no
time in joining the Howick
Optimists club here.
He also recently became
president of the Gorrie
Businessmen's ' Association
and is very active in that
organization.
Mr. Bakalar recently
headed a delegation from the
association that went to,
Howick Township Council to
ask for a snow removal
service to be initiated on the
main street of Gorrie.
Their request was turned
down, but Mr. Bakalar could
appreciate the council's wil-
lingness to discuss problems
with citizens. He said that in
Bramalea any such prob-
lems would be handled in-
ternally by the business as-
sociations.
There are a multitude of
differences between city
living and country dwelling
and one of these differences
is probably the main reason
the Bakalars are enjoying
themselves in Gorrie.
As Mr: Bakalar puts it,
Everybody is so friendly
