Corputers are a part of
modern fife, much like tele-

the Huron -Perth Separate
School Board is working on
guidelines for computer lit-
eracy studies.
Acting director of educa-
tion, John McCauley, report-
ed to the board at its March
12 meeting that an ad hoc
computer-assisted learning
committee, made up of
teachers and administration,
has been working on these
guidelines.
However, the committee
needs to expand, said Mr.
McCauley, to include a trus-
tee. This trustee would re-
port to the board, as it is ex-
pected the committee will
present proposals for the.
board's annual budget.
Trustee Vincent McInnes
of RR 4, Wingham was

This year the board ap-
proved about $30,000 in its
annual budget for the pur-
chase of computers and ex-
tras such as printers and
tape recorders.
It was just over a year ago
that the Separate School
Board purchased more than
20 computers so each school
in the two counties would
have at least one computer.
Besides making recom-
mendations on computer
purchases, the committee
will develop and implement
computer literacy pro-
grams,
Mr. McCauley said some
members of the committee
are able to write computer
programs and these could be
used in the school system.
4-H club to offer
gardening project
Learning to plant and care
for a garden will be the focal
point of a new 4-14 project on
gardening.
The project will also cover
home and farm beautifica-
tion to help Ontario look its
best as it celebrates its 200th .
birthda3' this„year;.,.
Members will learn how to
best use the land in their
garden for the produce or
flowers they want to grow.
Soil sampling and testing
will be done to show young
gardeners how to improve
the growth of their' plants.
Solving weed and insect
problems and 'caring 'for
lawns and shrubs also will be
covered, and .members will
learn how to exhibit their
vegetables. •
The members may choose
what they grow in their
gardens, but they must grow
at least one new vegetable
they have never cultivated
before. Senior members will
be encouraged to start some
perennial plants like a rose
garden, a grapevine or
rhubarb.
The home and farm
beautification section will
include taking "before” and
"after" photographs.
Most clubs will start in
April and finish with an
achievement day at whcih
members will display the
fruits of their labors. Anyone

There was spnlediscussion
on the number of computers
in each school. The acting.
director said the number
ranges from one to six be-
cause some schools have
purchased extra computers
through school funds or com-
munity fund raising.
Mr. McCauley said 90 per
cent of computers in the
schools are Commodore
PET 40-32 models and prob-
lems could arise if individual
schools purchased compu-
ters that are not compatible
with this model.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Carter of Salford are pleased
to announce the engagement
of their eldest daughter Anne
Louise to Mr. Robert John

Scott of Belgrave. The -mar-
riage will take place Satur-
day, April 28 at Knox Pres-
byterian Church, Belgrave
at 7 p.m. Open reception to
follow at Blyth Community
Centre.
A suggestion that only ex-
tras, such as a printer, be
purchased through school'
funds or fund raising is cur-
rently being discussed.
Mr. McCauley said he
would like to see one compu-
ter for every 25 students in
the Httron-Perth separate

take some time.
