He's Canada's oldest active pilot. He's an incredi- ble 90 years of age! Pearson is short, stocky and in , top flight physical condition. As a pilot, he's re- quired to have regular medi- cal check-ups. His friend Andy Hamilton who's just a kid of 58, says the doctors make Dick's tests as tough What was unusual about the 1916 Indy. 500 auto race? In the sky, his spirits soar as high as the planes he flies. As we cruised over his home town of Brantford, he said that although he's had a li- cense for close to half a cen- tury he still gets a thrill out of it all. "It's like being on a magic carpet," he chuckled. We were in his friend Andy's plane. Dick sold his own plane last year because his insurance rates had gone sky high. . When. we 'came down and went over to the clubhouse for a coffee, I noticed that the younger pilots have a great respect for the vibrant old aviator. He's admired for his knowledge, ability and experience. "He's very steady," one pilot was telling me. "He was trained in the old school, and he still walks around the plane; to check everything. He goes by the check list." Dick, a retired machinist, married for the first time 16 years ago. His wife has been ill in recent years, but he visits her daily at a nursing home. He says that to stay healthy he touches his toes 100 times, and twists at the waist 200 times every morn- ing. They were planning a big party for Dick when I- was there. All his old flying bud- dies were invited. The mem- bers gave me a sneak pre- view of the awards he was going to get, including one from The Canadian Hall of Fame. You could tell it was going to be quite an affair. A real wing -ding. They'd be flying high. You could bank on it!
