As each year progresses, Canada takes a more prominent role in film- making. It is an industry gaining world recognition and an industry of which all Canadians can be proud. "Maria Chapdelaine", a film made in Quebec telling about life at the turn of the century in rural Quebec, he,aded the list of nomina- tions. It was nominated for best picture and won nods for Nick Mancuso, Carole Laure and Amulette Garman, in lead and supporting acting roles. Also nominated as best picture is "The Terry Fox Story" which also won nominations for Eric Fryer, the young Canadian who played Fox, and two sup- porting players, Michael Zelniker and Elva Mai Hoover. Completing the list of best viottim nomitmOs are Christmas Warr which, also won a suppotting aotress nomination for Tedde Moore.; "Lucien Brotiillard" and "The Warr. Martha Henry from Wars, Marie Tifo from Lucien and in a role in "Rien qu'un jeu" as well, and Barbara March from "Deserters" complete the list for best actress Genie. Jackie Burroughs received a supporting ac- tress nod for her work in Wars. Other nominees in the best actor category are Pierre Curzi for Lucien, Guy L'Ecuyer for "An clair de la lune" and Alan Scarfe for Deserters. Canada's mastermind of horror, David Cronenberg, also came up with several nominations for his "Videodrome", including a best supporting nominations for Les Carlson, Peter Dvorsky and Sonja Smits. Cronenberg is also in the list of best director nominees and is cited for best screenplay.
