We use the room primarily for sit- ting, conversation, watching television and entertaining. Any suggestions? — R.V. A: Well-designed uphol- stered pieces in inviting colors and with fabrics that are comfortable to touch give great appeal to any room. Your platter was made by Ralph Wedgwood of Burs-' lem, England, not Josiah Wegewood, who made the fa- mous Wedgwood blue -and - white jasperware. He was active •from 1796 to 1801 and his china is relativelyrare. This piece Would sell or $175 to $225. Q. This solid walnut cradle has been banded down by many generations of my family. Would you please tell me about when it was made and its value? A. This Victorian cradle was made about the time of the Civil War and is a very desirable antique. It would sell in the $500'to $600 range. Q. I'm confused about Mis- sion oak furniture. Why should two armchairs that look almost identical be priced so differently? Some are from three to five times more expensive than others. A. Mission furniture was made by at least a dozen dif- ferent manufacturers. The pieces made by Gus- tav Stickley in Eastwood, N.Y., and bearing his label bring the best prices. There were other Stickleys making similar furniture, which makes it more confusing. Since Gustav Stickley in- troduced Mission -styles and the quality of his furniture was superior to his 'imita- tors, there is a greater de- mand for his furniture.
