It's 1924, and natives along the
Amazon River Valley are puzzled by a
strange noise overhead. Looking
skyward, they quickly realize it's a
bird like no other they've ever seen

The Seagull's mahogany hull is
painted bright silver, and its wings are
adorned with the flags of the United
States and Brazil. -
Through 1924 and into 1925, three
American explorers fly their reliable
Seagull along the lush, forbidding
Amazon. Their exploits are described
in the National Geographic Magazine
of April 1926. Their aircraft is on
display, with its hull 'restored to its
original mahogany finish, at the

The Art Gallery of On-
tario is mounting its largest
show ever to celebrate On-
tario's Bicentennial. "From
the Four Quarters: A His-
tory of Native and European
Art in Ontario" from 5,000
BC to 1867 AD is an assem-
blage of 400 items gathered
Europe and North America,
irTcruding`paintings of lead-
ing • natives by William
Berczy and Paul Kane, as
well. as. ornate objects
crafted of bone, shelf and
sinew.This spectacular
show goes on view at the
AGO March 30 to May 20.
.Contemporary native art
is presented in the AGO's
touring exhibit, "Norval
Morrisseau and the Emer-
gence of the, Image
Makers". The show takes a
new approach to native art
by presenting it in the
context of art history in-
stead of anthropology. After
a spring showing in Toronto,
the exhibit moves, on to
Thunder Bay, Chatham,
Sault Ste., Marie and
Sudbury.
Native art is also the
focus of the McMichael ---
Gallery's Bicentennial,
show in Kleinbilrg. Jasper
Grant was . an Irishman
serving as an Indian agent
for the British army during
the early 19th century, a
turbulent time when the
British sought native allies
in the area we now know as
Windsor. He collected
native household items and
articles of clothing elabor-
ately embroidered with
porcupine quills made by
the Woodland Indians.
These 45 well preserved
artifacts are returned to
Ontario for their first North
American exhibit • in
October.

An efficient system
for seeding flats
By Patrick Denton
Indoor seeding is a pre -
spring activity which will be
occupying the time of many
backyard gardeners during
the coming weeks. We all de-
velop our own systems
through the years and,today
I'd like to tell you about
mine.
First, because I do my
seeding at the kitchensink, I
like to have the equipment
organized so it cats= be
brought out of a nearby cup-
board each evening, used,
and quickly put away.
This equipment includes
the containers to be used for
planting; two large buckets
with tight lids, a hand -
mister, labels, a waterproof
felt pen, a small watering
can and a container of solu-
• tion made from powdered or
liquid seaweed.
use this same solution,
mixed at label rates, to pre -
dampen the potting mix in
the containers prior to plac-
ing the seeds on its surface.
Here's how I would go
about seeding a large flat
with, let's say, several dif-
ferent varieties of lettuce.
First, at the bottom of the
flat goes a layer of the.
dampened peat. It has been
well mixed and thoroughly
dampened with the seaweed
solution, and I squeeze it well
before layering it in the flat.
Next, the flat is filled not
quite to the top with the
planting mixture which is
gently tamped down but not
packed solid. The planting
mixture is then lightly but
evenly dampened, again
with the liquid seaweed.
Before seeding, the rows
can be. marked by making

firmed down.
At this point, I sprayinist
the surface to Omen it,
again with the seaweed solu-
tioeh kefore covering the flat
with a sheet of plastic; or
placing it inside a plastic
kgs I never pour- water onto
a newly seeded flat, or
directly on to seedlings.
When the rows are up, they
can be watered with a single
stream of lukewarm water
directed between the rows
and around the edges of the
container. Seedlings sown in
pots placed on damp peat in
.shallow waterproof con-
tainers can be watered from
below just by moistening the
peat.
As in the seeding of differ-
ent lettuces in one flat, a
large flat could also be

elbowroom by spacing the
rows between three and four
inches apart. Later, the in-
dividual rows are thinned to

Next comes the actual

mix. I've never found the

door seeding very satisfac-
tory. I find better control
over the seed flow when I
gather pinchfuls of seed
from my left palm with the
thumb and forefinger of my
right hand together. -
As each row is seeded, it's
important to` label it. On the
label goes the variety name,
seed company and seeding
an date. Inter, .the trans tent-
ing date outdoors is added.
Once the seeding of the flat
is complete, the seed is tight-

Springtime finds Ursa Major (the
Great Bear) high in the northeast at
maptime (9:30 p.m. around the mid-
dle of March, an hour later at the
beginning of the month, an hour ear-
lier at the end). When the Big Dipper
(the brightest stars In Ursa Major) is
higJi in the sky it is convenient to use
It to locate stars and constellations in
the north In much the same way that
Orion is used to Locate stars in the
southem half of the sky. Most impor-
tant,
mportant, It is a convenient guide to find
Polaris and, consequently, the direc-
tion North.
Face north, and tum the map so
"northem horizon" Is at the bottom.
Note how an extension of the curve of
the handle of the Dipper leads first to
golden -yellow Arcturus (in the con-
stellation Boates) and eventually to
beautiful pure white Spica (in Virgo).
Note as well how Ursa Major and
Cassiopeia lie on opposite sides of
Polaris, and about the same distance
from It. Regulus, said to mark tie
heart of Leo (the Lion), Iles about 45°
beyond the bottom o1 the Dipper. (For
easy reference the distance across
the knuckles of the fist held at arm's
.length Is about 10°.) A large triangle
formed by Polaris, the bowl of the
Dipper and Capella (in Auriga) may
also help to orient the beginner. An.
other somewhat smaller triangle for-
med by Sirius. Procyon and Betel-
s geuse can be found In the southwest.

01 all the northem circumpolar con-
•stellatlons, Cassiopeia runs a close
second to Ursa Major in popularity.
Easily recognized, It is a large sprawl-
ing M or W-shaped forrhation, de-
pending on its orientation to the
horizon. Cassiopeia and Ursa Major
lie bn opposite sides of Polaris and
about the same distance from It. On a
spring evening when Ursa Major Is
high In the northeast, Cassiopeia is
nearing the nofihwestem horizon.
Enjoy it soon, for when it reaches its
summer position, it Is low in the north
and may be hidden by trees or
buildings,
Cassiopeia means "The Lady in the
Chair". The constellation Is ancient,
dating back to about 3500 B.C. In
Creek mythology, Cassopeia, wife of
Cepheus, King of Ethlopela, and •
mother of Andromeda, was chained
to a chair and transported to the sky
to punish her for excessive conceit
and vanity.
