Sometime you overlook the
obvious. Although Ifeen
travelling the province for
years I didn't know there
was a Royal Chapel of the
Mohawks in Eastern Ontario,
until its Bicentennial was be-
ing celebrated. It's located
on the Tyendinaga Reserve
which surrounds the village
of Desoronto.
I made a few inquiries. No
one I talked to including a
couple of historians, had
heard of it either. Yet it's the
oldest chapel in Ontario!
Not only that, it's one of
just two Royal chapels to
exist outside the United
Kingdom. The other is the
Royal Chapel of the Mo-
hawks in Brantford which
has been wellpublicized.
"The Forgotten Chapel",
as I began to think of it, was
built in 1774 shortly after
some of the ,Royalist Mo-
hawks landed at the Bay of
Quinte following the Ameri-
can Revolution. Lead by
Chief Desoronto, there were
only 15 families up there.
They had been granted land
by the Crown for their loyal-
ty.
As soon as they landed on
Quinte shores they turned '
over their canoes and held a
church service using their
treasured Queen Ann Silver
Communion Service. •
That's a story in itself.
They had received the silver
service ft•om Queen Ann
when five Mohawk Chiefs
went to England in the early
1700s to meet the Queen.
They took the present back
to their settlement near Fort
Hunter in New York state.
When the Americans piaged
their villages they buried the
silver, and dut it up later
when they left for Canada.
Shortly after clearing the
land near the Bay and
establishing what is now
Tyenindage, they built the
chapel under royal patron-
age. There are three pieces
of it at the chapel. The re-
mainder went with Chief Jo-
seph Brant anda larger band
who went on to the Brantford
district.
.The custodian of the silver
at Tyendinago in Milville
Hill was a former chief, a de-
scendant of Desoronto and
now the band's historian. He
was telling me it's the most
historic, the oldest, and the
rnost valuable silver in
Canada.
The Royal Chapel itself is
a beautiful little church. The
Anglican clergyman, Rev.
Kenneth Blaiber, simulated
a brief ceremony for us. His
official title is "Chaplain of
the Mohawks of the Quinte".
The choir sang in Mohawk,
in the shadow of the Union
Jack and the coat of arms
sent to the Royal Chapel by
George III.
Melville Hill was saying
that the chapel has never
been visited, by royalty, al-
thoughmembers of the
Royal Family have been to
the Brantford Chapel on
numerous occasions.
Meanwhile, the loyalist
Mohawks of the Quinte have
been hoping that during their
Bicentennial celebrations
they might finally get a royal
visit to "The Forgotten
Chapel".

VOLCANOES IN OUR SO-
LAR SYSTEM! By G. Jef-

On earth there are about
500 active volcanoes, which
shows that the earth is a geo-
logically active planet.
There are volcanoes on other
planets as well — Venus,
Mars, Jupiter's moon Io.
Mercury and our moon have
a history ofvolcanic action.
The moon is no longer geolo-
gically active.
G. Jeffrey Taylor's book
"Volcanoes in Our Solar Sys-
tem" explains that when it
comes to volcanoes outside
of earth 'what we know is
only of heavenly bodies that
we have been able to explore
so far. On these the book
gives a lot of information and
also tells of comets, which
are icy objects beyond the
planets, and of asteroids,
which are small bodies that
revolve around the sun be-
tween the orbits of Mars and
Jupiter.
This is a science book that
is easy to read and under-
stand.
