WALL UNITS—Installing wall units Inside a closet of main to close off clutter or be removed to create a re -
a guest bedroom can convert the bedroom into a multi- cessed area. Adding a lounge chair or two, such as
media room or mini -den. Door to the closet can re- these Stratolounger recliners, provides for relaxing.
Closet is key to
guest room conversion
By Barbara Hartung
Q. Since I have recently
retired, I've been having
quite a few houseguests and I
love it. I would like to con-
vert
my guest room in my
condo into a den and office
but still use it for overnight
guests on occasion.
I believe I will get rid of
my double bed and replace it
with a sleep sofa. What other
pieces would you add in the
room which is moderate in
size? One wall has closets,
one is broken by a fair -size
window and two walls are
solid. — M.V.
A. An extremely effective
way to make a conversion,
such as you describe, is to
begin by converting the.
closet into a wall of built-ins
for storage, for displaying
accessories and for housing.
a television set and perhaps
a stereo.
In selecting wall units, ydu'"
might choose one chest of
drawers that could be kept
for your visitors. Others
could to cabinets, opened
and closed types.
You could leave the doors
of your closet on and then
conceal the interior if you
wished. Or I have seen
apartment dwellers move
the doors and store them,
replacing them when they
sell or move. Either way you
press into use valuable space
in a room that must perform
many functions.
By all means select a
sleeper sofa that will provide
for sleeping as well as com-
fortable seating.
• A desk or a writing table
also is a desirable piece of
furniture for a den so you can
pay bills, write letters and
keep all your business tasks
in one place.
If you are a modern type,
consider space for a home
computer in this room be-
cause you just might want
one eventually.
Perhaps an L-shaped work
surface that would fit snugly
into one corner would func-•
tion for you. Provide some
bookcases or.. bookshelves
above and some lower stor-
age for paper, disks and
supplies.
Q. We have converted our
garage into a family room
and have large expanses of
wall space. The walls are not
terribly well -finished but
may be acceptable with a
coat of fresh paint.
We have our lounge furni-
ture, a game table and four
chairs and a desk in the
room.
I'm a bit troubled by the
walls and wonder if I should
do something beyond paint-
ing 'to conceal their imper-
fections.— R.R.
A. If the walls are simply
rough you could try sanding
out the imperfections and
then covering the walls with
a covering that would be
heavy, and textured — per-
haps a grass cloth or a vinyl
alni'ulated linen or grass
cloth. These are nice wall
coverings in a casual room
because you can pound small
nails•into the fabric and re-
move them later without
leaving unsightly marks.
If the walls are too bumpy,
you may have trouble apply-
ing the wall covering and the
imperfections might still be
noticeable.
If you need storage and
want to go to the expense of
having door frames made,
you might consider lining the
walls with built-in cabinets
across two of your walls.
Have the doors made with
inexpensive frames and put
wire grill -work into them
rather than solid panels.
To the back of the doors
hang window -shade type
fabric panels — perhaps a
single bright color. The
shades can be raised or
lowered, depending on whe-
ther you want to conceal
what's inside. The doors
could be built of -inch
clear pine and 1 -inch square
wire mesh,- mortised into the
door.
Changing the colors of the
shade fabric would be easy
as you change the color
scheme of the room. This
way your imperfect walls
would be relatively unim-
portant but they'd function
Well by providing lots and
lots of important storage.

Q. My antique violin is
labeled, "Antonio Strad-
ivari, Cremona, Made in
Czechoslovakia." Can you
tell me its value and where I
might sell it?
A. Stradivari made violins
in Cremona, Italy, over 200
years ago. They are the most
valuable of all antique vio-
lins.

No. 171 (sketch of mark at-
tached)? It is a little girl

A. This is the "Little
Sweeper" with the. Crown
Mark (Trade Mark No. 1) . It
was made between 1934 and
1950 and currently is selling
for about $200.
Q. I have read in your
column that any china made
after 1890 was marked
"Made in France" or what-
ever the country of origin.
Wasn't any china made
prior to 1890 marked that
way?
A. I never say "never,"
but it is highly unlikely. It
was customary to mark cer-
amics with the name of the
city where it was made.
One good example was
Limoges, France. Prior to
the passage of the McKinley
Tariff Act of 1891, the manu-
facturers of fine porcelain in
Limoges were more inter-
ested in publicizing their city
than in .promoting their
country. Until 1891, Haviland
china was marked
"Limoges, France." When
the McKinley Tariff Act was
amended in 1901, it was
marked "Made in France".
