I received a letter from a
woman in Cochrane which I
am sure reflects the feelin
of a lot of people in Northern
Ontario..e begins: "We
watch Global News on TV
most nights, and more and
more lately, it seems as if
Northern Ontario is another
country, not in Canada at all.
We hear about the PLO and
Lebanon, IIIA bombs in Lon-
don and detailed items of
news from the USA. But at
your comfortable desks in
Toronto, do you ever stop to
wonder what is going on in
the northern part of your
own province, Ontario?"
There's more, in the same
vein, and, a suggestion that
for a start we should do a
story on what alcohol is do-
ing to the native population.
"Anyway," she says, "next
time you ramble on about the
Middle East, spare a thought
for the Immediate North, in
your own country. Many of
the stories end in murder or
bloodshed, so it's a war too,
in away."
She is right, of course. Glo-
bal's coverage of the North is
almost nonexistent, and so is
the:coverage of most of our
southern competitors. But
let me quibble for a minute.
Anchor desks in Toronto are
not comfortable places. And
it would be difficult for any
of us not to spare a thought
for the north when so .many
of our viewers in the region
rightfully give us the devil
for ignoring it. Mostly, it's a
matter of time and money.
Getting stories out of the
north can be hideously ex-
pensive and time-consum-
ing. Ironically, it's much
easier to bring in a story
from Calgary or Halifax
than it is from Northern Ont-
ario. As it happens, we re-
cently had a crew in the Sud-
bury region doing a series of
stories but that is the excep-
tion to the rule.

the media is just one of the
immutable facts about life in
Canada, and a serious part of
the problem faced by Cana-
dian communicators. It con-
tributes to the fact that more
and more of our television
news is becoming American.
The cost of covering Canada
is prohibitive, and because
inos-t Canadian news organi-
zations are clients of one or
more of the American net-
work a flat annual fee for ac-
cess to all of its news mat-
erial. The feeds a fat one, but
when you work out the cost
per item of the American
material used, it is infinitely
cheaper for us to show you a •
same-day story from Leba-
non that it would to show you
something two days old from
Moosonee.
Even Canadian coverage
from abroad is cheaper than
Canadian coverage at lime.
I once satellited a storfrom •
Southern Lebanon for $700 a
time when it would have cost
us $4,000 to feed the same
item from Vancouver. This
too is one of the ugly facts of
life in the Canadian TV news
business. That's why, night
after night, you get intimate
detail of news events in the
United States and nothing
from Cochrane. It's one ma-
• jor reason why this country
faces an identity crisis. And
it's a subject I'll lake up
again when I'm less discour-
aged about it.
