Where the action is
By W. Roger Worth
The experts are having
difficulty with their predic-
tions. Some economists,
analysts and specialists are
fore casting good times
ahead. Others take the oppo-
site approach, providing
doom -and -gloom projections
that seem to indicate high
unemployment is here to
stay.
Indeed, some are even
talking about a return of high
interest rates and high infla-
tion.
The fact is, the experts
rely mainly on statistics
from the past to somehow
forecast the future. And
most times the thousands of
number crunchers hired by
governments, the univer-
sities and major business or-
ganizations are as much
wrong as they are right.
What's more, to put it
bluntly, the number jugglers
are involved in what is, in
many ways, a guessing
game, and the good ones will
admit there is ample reason
for the ambiguous language
they use in their reports.
Suffice it to say, there are
few, if any, among us that
can predict the future.
-Nevertheless, something
important is happening in
the economic universe, and
it's a factor that many of the
experts have missed.
The relatively new action
is called SMEs, which is a
short way of saying small
and medium-sized enter-
prises.
Indeed, the small business
sector is exploding, and
that's a positive reference.
Consider what many of the
number crunchers miss in
their economic assessments.
For several years now,
smaller firms have been
creating all the net new job
growth in the country.,While
large firms have been laying
off employees, smaller com-
panies have been picking up
the slack.
Even in a recession -plagu-
ed year such as 1982, there
were 150,000 small business
startups. That number in-
creased to 200,000 ih 1983,
and that number will in-
crease again this year as the
economy rebounds.
If that's not enough evi-
dence that crucial changes
are taking place, have a look
at your local magazine rack.
The number of publications
emphasizing business, and
particularly small business
issues, has shown pheno-
menal growth, as have the
circulation figures for those
publications that have been
around for years.
Then there are the cour-
ses. Attendance at seminars,
workshops and lectures on
small business has expanded
to the point where several
dozen smaller firms are
earning healthy profits pro-
viding- advice, and even,
major companies are now
entering the lucrative field.
Canadians, it seems, are be-
coming enchanted with the
idea they can and should
operate their own enter-
prises. -
Not all of them, of course,
will take the plunge. And
sadly, many that do will fail.
Nevertheless, the risk
takers who are successful
will provide badly needed
jobs, as well as a boost for
our economy.
In fact, the new generation
of innovative entrepreneurs
may be the ones to prove the
doom -and -gloom economic
experts wrong, which would
be good news indeed.
