actor -actress
special treat Jan. 26 on
Channel 2, Detroit, when Sir
Laurence Olivier played
King Lear in the -classic play
by the same name.
Unfortunately, this
masterpiece was shown only
to cable subscribers which
meant that many people in
our circulation area missed
out on.the greatest actor of
our time taking on one of the
greatest roles of all time.
id -w erbet£eY-to-pa.,...yhe
aged king than the aged king
of stage and screen? Olivier
is . magnificent as, the old
man wronged byhis two
greedy daughters, yet. loved
by one. As usual there are
the predictable Shakes-
pearean twists, but'the basic
themes of love, honor, greed
and hate are still as familiar
to us today as they were 400
years ago.
Diana Rigg of "The
Avengers" fame is perfectly
nasty as Regan, one of the
old king's greedy daughters
and is especially vile when
she stands by and watches
her husband put out the eyes
of the old and defenceless
Earl of Glouchester.
John Hurt ("The Elephant
Man") as King Lear's trusty
fool makes the old man
painfully aware of his
mistakes, even though he,
the fool, is thought to be quite
senseless.
But as in most
Shakespearean works, the
bad guys get their just
reward and the ,good
triumph. "King Lear"
makes us forget the usually
banal stuff that is shown on
TV these days- and reminds
us of what the media can
really do if given the proper
vehicle.
