Paneling: treatment

Q, We'rkplanning to wood
panel our living room. I
want to have actual wood
paneling Installed, rather'
than the simulated wood
paneling of vinyl
We will be installing a
nevi fireplace at the same
time. I like contemporary
design so I am wondering
what kind of mantle, if any,
I should have.
Please give me some
ideas. — W.L.
A. You might be interest-
ed in a desigf>i by Peg Walker ,
who selected prefinished •
paneling for a room she cre-
ated.
She used the knotty pine
paneling ..in the traditional
vertical manner on the
walls. Over the fireplace, in-
stead of a mantle, she had
the paneling cut and in-
stalled in a chevron pattern.
The change in lines of the
paneling gives an emphasis

SUBTLE EMPHASIS—Dominant point in this room, designed by Peg Walker, is
the fireplace where pine paneling has been installed in a chevron pattern. The
design eliminates need for a mantle but gives subtle emphasis to fireplace area.
to the fireplace without cre-
ating a heavily demanding
focal point. -
The fireplace is a new en-
ergy-saving model which its
manufacturers claim re-
• turns 60 percent more heat
to the room than the conven-
tional built-in fireplace.
The subtle use of paneling
with a variation in manner
of installation offers a re,
strained contrast in a room.
An important piece of art
over the fireplace can add
drama to the room, elimi-
nating the need for' a tradi-
tional mantle.
Q. I have just bought a
very lovely secretary -desk
in a Chinese design for our
master bedroom. The new
piece of furniture is the
traditional black lacquer
with rusty -red and cream -
colored flouters on the doors
and drawer fronts.
I'd like . some ideas for
wall, bed and floor colors.
Our other furniture in the
room is a restrained Chinese
teak in a dark, dark .brown

wallpaper or fabric that
you'd like to put on the walls
but can't is to create large
screens to which you apply
the desired pattern.
You can .buy narrow hol-
low -core doors at a hard-
ware or lumber yard. Attach
the doors together with
piano hinges or heavy ones
that will allow you to- ar-
range the screens easily —
either against a wall or per-
pendicular to a wall to cre-
ate a temporary wall.
Cover the doors with the
wallpaper or fabric. Edge
the material with gimp or
braid for a finished look if
you use fabric.

A. You might choose your
colors from your new`secre-
tary-desk, and tie the 'Cream
color as the. basic 'shade for
carpeting and walls, For the
bedspread you might like a
rusty -red bedspread in a
very tailored design.
Or you might choose a
golden yellow for the carpet-
ing, a slightly lighter tone
for .the' walls and a medium
yellow for the bedspread.
Pillows of cream and rusty -
red could accent your new
piece of furniture.
Because furniture with a
Chinoiserie flavor is usually
extremely decorative and
quite dramatic; a plain back-
ground« in the walls, and
floor usually is morecom-
patible than deep, dramatic
colors.
Q. I have a real love of
African and Oceanic art and
have collected a few pieces
that I hope will grow into a
sizable collection.
Now I am in a rented
apartment where I can't do
anything to the white walls
and white vinyl floor. I'd like
to introduce some interest-
ing batiklike wallpaper but
that's out of the question.
How can I bring in a jun-
gleiike atmosphere. to com-
plement my African and
Oceanic art? — W.W.C.

this kind of decorating.
Choose a print that gives the

phere you are seeking.
Fill in with large and
small potted plants. The

you move to new quarters

ent landlord.
If you feel you need a
floor covering, consider your
choice after finding the fab-

two out of the fabric for an

trasting color — another
item you can take with you.

Q. This is a copy of the
mark on the bottom of my
Hummel Madonna. Please
tell me what you ,can about
its vintage and value.
A. First, this is not a Hum-
mel. It was made by the Goe-
bel company in Oeslau, Ger-
many. Goebel made the
Hummel figurin5es but also
made other items under the
Goebel name.
Your Madonna was made
in the 1930s and would be,
worth at least $100.
Q. This clock was made by
the Waterbury Clock Co. Can
you tell me when it was
made and how much it is
worth?
A. Your clock was made in
the early 20th century and
would currently sell in the
$125 to $175 range.
It is not old enough (100
years) to be an antique, but
it is collectible.

china very confusing. Some
people seem to consider, it
the finest china ever made
and some are not very im-
pressed by it. Can you ex-
plain just what Dresden
china is?
A. Dresden china' is any
china (porcelain) made in
the city of Dresden, Ger-
many. Some is good; some is
not.
One of the finest procelains
ever made, now known as
Meissen, was first made in
Dresden by the Royal Saxon.
China Manufactory. In 1710
the company moved to Meis-
sen. Because of this, there
were at least seven manu-
facturers of china in Dresden
— some good; some not.
