Open Thurs.. Fri. evenings Benton By Colette Bouchez "Basically," says Super Beauty Barbi Benton, "I'm a fat person in a skinny per- son's body because, boy, do I love to eat ! " One look at this gorgeous Hollywood lady and you'd never suspect food was high on her, list of consuming pas- sions! But, according to the singer -actress and former Playboy Playmate, she has developed the concept of watching her diet into a veri- table science. "To begin with," she says, "my husband and I worked out a deal with our gourmet chef. He's only allowed to cook fattening dishes when we have guests for dinner. The rest of the time he is not allowed to cook anything that has butter or oil. You'd be surprised at how many calories are saved. "For example, vegetables are filling and taste great, but if you cook them withil, forget it — they are no longer non-fattening. "Last year I planted my own herb garden, so we just pluck some fresh herbs and add them to the water that the vegetables are steaming in. "Also, you can use the herbs to make diet soups and salads. We can eat two five - course meals in a day and only consume 1,000 calo- ries." Another of Barbi's dieting tips includes keeping a strict "food schedule" which al- lows her to eat anything she wants for a limited, restrict- ed time period. And she and her husbani'i use the"buddy system" to keep to the sche- dule. "My husband and I have a plan. worked out that When we go any= thing we want and we never say, anything to each other like, 'Don't eat that.' But the triek is, we restrict ourselves to going out only twice a week. "If there comes a week," Barbi continues, "when we have social obligations for three nights, we will avoid dinner out for one of those nights and eat one of our low - calorie meals beforehand. Or, if eating out absolutely can't be avoided, the follow- E BARBI BENTON ing week we'll only go out once." Barbi has also found that by doing a little selective shopping, she can find many good dietetic foods that curb her appetite when eaten in moderation. "One of my favorites," says this Super Beauty, "is a non-dairy whipped topping, mixed with a small amount of flavored extract such as vanilla or my favorite, maple. Then spoon it over fresh fruit. Your craving for sweets disappears and you've only eaten about 20' calories more than if you ate the fruit plain. "Also," she adds, "diet hot chocolate is wonderful if you have to have your `chocolate passion' satisfied. 'It's only about 50 calories a cup and you can cut that in half by adding twice as much water and a very little bit of low-fat milk. "And," concludes Barbi, "don't overlook artificially sweetened fruit drinks — the kind you make from a pow- dered mix. They are s6 much better for you that diet soda or canned drinks because they don't bloat you as much and there's no salt. They al- low you to satisfy' your crav- ings for sweets and fill you Np so you eat less and don't fell deprived."
