Phone Mr. Carman, Wingham 357-1441. 1, 8 In a recent Toronto Star c sports column, Milt Dunnell c quarrels gently with John Robert Colombo's contention that the biggest sports story in Toronto's history was Marilyn Bell's swim across Lake Ontario. So do I. Mr. Dunnell suggested a number of other possibil- ities, including Paul Hender- son's series -winning goal against the Soviets- in 1972. That's a good one, but one I like better was, the second game in that series, which, was ` played in Maple Leaf Gardens after the stunning series opener in Montreal. The Soviets won that one, ° and most of the male Cana- dians I know, and a lot of women - too, were having to adjust to the fact that we no longer played the best hockey in the world. We agonized nationally. But we won the second game,_in Maple Leaf Gardens, and if we didn't feel entirely confi- dent again about the state of our national game, we went to bed that night feeling a good deal easier. I knew I was screaming at that game when big Peter Mahovolich got a breakaway, because my throat was raw by the time he scored. But I couldn't hear my own voice, because everyone in the building was yelling the same way. Mr. Dunnell mentioned some other moments, which might qualify as the greatest in Toronto's sporting history, one of them when Ned Han- lan won the world champion- ship of sculling, by beating a huge Australian, Edvthed A. Trickett, over a British Bourse which was four miles, w h ti`t r hundred0Thatand must forty-four have - , 'Y(1 r s ething. . .,II ad:,,,Banlan dominated sculling for more than a de - • Residential • Commercial • Industrial • Refrigeration • Service • Heat Pumps Johnson Electric 291-3664 Rick Johnson 180 Havelock Ave. S. Listowel, Ontario ade. He won the rowing hampionship of Toronto Bay in 1873, of Ontar in 1875, of Canada in 1877, o e w United States in 1878, of Eng- land in 1879, and of the world in 1880. My family was given' a copy of a book called Toronto in Art for Christmas, and in it, there is a painting by F. M. Bell -Smith, entitled "Hanlan's Reception, Toronto, 1879." That would have been after he won the (championship of England, nd this time, like all the others, the Toronto reception was tumultuous. In the painting, Hanlan is standing on the pilot house of a big paddlewheel steamer as it moves slowly along the Toronto waterfront past Union Station: The paddle - wheeler and Hanlan are sur- rounded by hundreds of small craft, some of which accompanied him on the tri- umphal return journey all the way from Lewiston, New York. Dense crowds line the shoreline. The crush was so heavy ,When Hanlan arrived at Queen's Park, that the heavy iron pillar of a letter box was broken right off. In his time, there is little doubt that Hanlan was' this country's best known cititen. So famous in fact, that Gold - win Smith, was moved to make a typical Canadian comment. He was offended deeply, he said, by "the sug- gestion that Canada is in- debted to a professional oarsman for redemption from obscurity and con- tempt." No one, that I know of, was moved to sneer at Paul Hen- derson or Marilyn Bell for the country's redemption, So 1 cast my vote in the debate over Toronto's greatest sporting event for Hanlan's world victory in 11:1.0.
