Throughout the game,
Eric Deyell made his

Deyell charged fearlessly

stopped Belgrave in its
rushes by standing his

Optimist Atoms win two
and lose one last week
Last Saturday evening, the
Normanby Atoms came to
town for a meeting with a
determined Winghain Op-
timist Atoms team which
defeated the visitors 6-1.
Wingham showed a well-
balanced attack, forecheck-
ing the puck with authority.
Peter Poulin played a strong
game, scoring _two _pretty
goals, especially his second
one, which was set up on .a
fine passing play from Dave
McKee.
Scott Neil continues to
make his presence felt,
scoring two goals and adding
one assist.
Other point getters were

Andrew Gibson had
another good game in net

in the dying minutes of the
game, making a sparkling

BREAKAWAY GOAL—Brett Cameron made no mistake after he was set free on a
breakaway late in the second period against the Walkerton Black Hawks. He made a
nifty move and tucked the puck into the net to give Wingham Ironmen a 6-3 lead. The
Ironmen went on to win '7-5 and nail downmtop spot in the upcoming playoffs.
NO CONTEST—Scott Fritz in the Walkerton net never had a chance as Kevin Coultes
was set up perfectly at the corner of the crease for the go-ahead goal that gave
Wingham Ironnien a 2-1 lead early in the second period. The goal was set up by Jim
LeGrand, who twisted and turned and hung onto the puck until he could find the open
Forest in an exhibition
match and ended up on the
short end of a 4-0 score.
Mount Forest has a good-
skating'• club which played
excellent positional hockey
and didn't allow the local
boys to get untracked,
especially in the first two
periods when the visitors
went ahead 3-0 and could
have'increased the lead Had
it not been for a strong
defensive corps and Gibson's
goaltending.
In - the e third period
Wingham came to life and
had several good scoring
opportunities, but was
unable to get on the
scoreboard. Mount Forest
was held to a single goal to
end the game.
All agreed it was a good
opportunity to meet a team
of this calibre and, from the
talk in the dressing room, the
boys are eagerly looking
forward to a return match.

ICE CHIPS — Wingham's
Lions Midgets showed a lot
of heart in this tournament.
They played shorthanded,
with several players out with
the flu and a number of
others playing while sick.
And none of the Wingham
fans will forget the gutsy
performance of Sw.eeney
who filled in as goaltender
and did a spectacular job.
Congratulations to the
Wingham Midgets on win-
ning the consolation
championship at Paisley.
Royals romp to 9-2 win
over Teeswater Falcons
By Bill Johnston
It was Royal hockey last
Sunday at the local arena as,
in a rare Sunday home
game, the Royals downed
their Teeswater neighbors 9-
2 in WOAA Intermediate
hockey.
Wingham struck early as
Rick MacLennan threaded
one through the legs of
Teeswater goalie Ben Black-
well a mere 1:25 into the
game. Add to this Dave
Stephenson's solo effort and
a goal by Mike Montgomery
and the Royals were riding
on a 3-0 lead at the end of the
first.
In the second, each team
picked up a pair of goals.
Larry Meyer struck early for
Teeswater's first goal, a
mere 54 seconds into the
period. The Royals got that
one back as Dave Burns won
the faceoff and the pass to

Ironmenfinally nail down
first place in league division.
By Peter Bauer
The Wingham Ironmen
finally nailed down first
place overall in the OHA
Central Division with a 7-5
win over the visiting
Walkerton Black Hawks last
Friday evening in Wingham.
It was the last game of the
regular season before
playoff action begins this
week.
The Ironmen won the
match by a 7-5 count but
looked as though they were
trying to allow their op-
ponents to get back into the
game as the Ironmen
jumped to a 5-2 lead then saw
that lead slip to a close 5-3
spread.
However the Ironmen
bounced back to make it 7-3
before the end of the second
period. Once again they sat
back and allowed the Hawks
to come within two goals and
in the dying minutes of the
game depended upon Mike
Campbell to come up with
some of his best saves to
preserve the win.
The clubs emerged from
the first period tied at 1-1
with the Hawks scoring first
at the 4:29 mark. The
Ironmen failed to clear the
puck out of their own zone
and found themselves down
1-0 after Wayne Hinsperger
converted a Doug Busby
pass in the slot for the
opening goal.
" Rick Scrimgeour tied the
score for Wingham at 8:01
when he moved from the
corner, deked Scot Fritz to
the ice, then slid the puck
past the netminder.
The Ironmen exploded for
four quick goals in less than
four minutes with Kevin
Coultes scoring twice while
Ken Fitzgerald and Steven
Nicholson added singles,
making it 5-1 for the Iron -
men. The Hawks mounted
some pressure midway
through the period resulting
in two goals.
The first carne at 10:08 on
a shot by Paul Snodgrass.
Less than two minutes later
the Hawks connected" on the
power play as Kevin Elliott
poked a loose puck by
Campbell after he had made
a save on Glen Elliott.
The Ironmen rebounded to
score two shorthanded goals
late in the period with Brett
Cameron and Jim LeGrand
credited with the sixth and
seventh Ironmen goals.
' These would prove to be
the big goals• as the Hawks
scored twice in the first three
minutes of the final frame
with Dan McFadden and
Kevin Elliott the marksmen.
In the latter stages . of the
period the Hawks pressed
while enjoying the man
advantage and Campbell
was forced to make three
Consecutive saves on othe
same play.
The win proved important
as Port Elgin defeated the
Clinton Mustangs 6-3,
coming two points short 'of
the league -leading Ironmen.
The Ironmen wound up with
41 .points .while Port Elgin
finished in second spot with
39. Kincairdine took third
spot with 35 points, while
Hanover - earned the last
playoff spot with 34 points.
Walkerton was fifth overall
