Three cheers for Christine
Craft! She has chalked up
another victory for herself
,and for women! A second.
trial 'came to an end last
week after three weeks of
rehashing events that oc-
curred after Craft .was
• removed from her job as
news anchorwoman at a
Kansas City television
station. Management said
she was too old, losing her
good looks and not
deferential enough to men.
She argued that she had been
hired not for her looks, but
for her skills as a journalist
and she took the then -owners
of the station, Metromedia
Inc., to court; suing them for
over three million dollars.
Last summer in •Kansas
City, ,a jury awarded Craft
$500,030 and the victory was
sweet for her and for women
everywhere pursuing
careers , in non-traditional
jobs. In early fall, however,
a judge threw out the
decision and ordere,d a new
trial. He said the settlement
was too high.
After a three-hour deli-
beration, the jury in this
'month's trial came'up with a
settlement of $225,000 in
actual damages. An hour
later, they came back witl-
an additional $100 000 in
.punitive damages. Nletro-
media is expected to appeal
the decision but for now,
Craft has another victory
and maintains the support of
every working woman in
America.
A new movie has rekindled
interest.in the case of Karen
Silkwood who 'dted almost
ten years ago in Oklahoma.
"Silkwood", which stars
actress Meryl Streep in the
title role, tells the story of
Karen. a young lab analyst
who worked at the Kerr-
V!eGee mlrlear prncecSinv
5I.ant in Cimarron, Okla-
homa.
In July of 1974, Karen
learned that she had been
contaminated by radiation.
She began a fight to rid the
plant of several safety.
hazards and was coming up
with a very impressive list
when she lost her life in a car
accident while on her way to
meet a newspaper reporter.
Her death was ruled ac-
cidental and; though the
Department of Justice found
no evidence of foul play, a
federal court ordered Kerr-
McGee to pay Silkwood's
dependents ten million
dollars in 1979. Two years
later, a Court of Appeals
ruled that the amount be
trimmed "somewhat", to a
mere $5,000, saying Karen's
case was not an "ex:
traordinary nuclear oc-
currence".
Late in 1983, however, the
Supreme Court heard the
case and upheld the first
decision, ten million dollars
to be awarded to Karen's
children - a case no doubt
brought back to life because
of the movie which is quality
entertainment and almost
certain to win Oscar
nominations for star Streep
and supporting actress Cher.
